<\/p>\nMyles Butchers in Ardfinnan closed their doors over the May bank holiday weekend, with Tommy Myles hanging up his apron after more than 70 years of working in the shop.<\/p>\n
In a statement, Mr Myles said that the decision hadn\u2019t been made lightly, but that difficult trading conditions helped to make the decision.<\/p>\n
“Now, in my 87th year, with over 70 years working in the shop, the time has come for me to retire, and in light of the extremely difficult trading circumstances in recent years, I believe this is the right decision,\u201d Mr Myles said.<\/p>\n
“The shop has proudly served the Ardfinnan, Ballybacon, Grange, Newcastle and the surrounding areas since my father started the business in 1926, and after 100 years at the heart of the village, this decision has not been made lightly,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Mr Myles paid tribute to his late wife Ina, his family, and all his staff \u2013 both past and present \u2013 for their hard work. He also thanked his customers, who made the shop a central part of Ardfinnan village.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will miss the fun, the chats, and the craic with all of you, something which has been at the heart of your visits to us over the years,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Independent Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath paid tribute to Tommy Myles and his family, wishing him a pleasant retirement.<\/p>\n
“Best wishes to Myles Butchers, Ardfinnan, as they cease trading after 100 years in business,\u201d Deputy McGrath said.<\/p>\n

“A special tribute is extended to Tommy, his family, and the entire staff for their lifetime of service to the people of Ardfinnan and beyond. I wish them all a very happy and healthy retirement,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Comments on social media also thanked Mr Myles for his lifetime of service to the village, saying that \u201cit will be a sad day for the village,\u201d when they close.<\/p>\n
“It’s sad to see Myles Butchers go. You gave a lot of young lads work during your time,\u201d one person said.<\/p>\n
Another said: \u201cHappy Retirement Tommy, you surely deserve it. A pure gentleman, you are going to be missed by so many.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ardfinnan Tidy Towns said: \u201dYou have been a brilliant supporter of Ardfinnan Tidy Towns throughout the years for which we are incredibly grateful.<\/p>\n
“The village certainly won’t be the same when the doors shut. Best wishes to you and your staff in the coming years. Ye will be missed,\u201d the local tidy towns group added.<\/p>\n
“Enjoy your well-earned retirement Tommy, wishing you good health and contentment in a job well done. The shop and staff and the banter will be missed,\u201d another person said, while another added \u201can end of an era. Certainly will be a sad day for the village.\u201d<\/p>\n
Myles Butchers closed their doors for the final time on Saturday, May 2, bringing seven decades of service to an end.<\/p>\n
