Cork City Council are going to take over and knock the derelict house<\/p>\n

A derelict property<\/a> along one of the busiest roads in Bishopstown is set to be demolished after two decades of decay, with Cork City Council confirming plans to purchase and tear down the long-standing eyesore.<\/p>\n

The property sits along the Bishopstown Road between Cork University Hospital<\/a> and the Bishopstown Bar, a road used by thousands of motorists each day. The property was occupied until 2006 and was later boarded up after falling into disrepair. The home has continued to decay, with netting installed in the 2010s to prevent falling tiles from injuring passersby.<\/p>\n

In recent years, the home has been used little more than as an advertising board, and local residents have repeatedly raised concerns about the derelict property with local representatives. This week, Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer and his party colleague Cllr Gary O’Brien welcomed confirmation from Cork City Council that it is progressing with the acquisition of a property.<\/p>\n

Deputy Buttimer said: \u201cFollowing many representations over several years, by myself and other local councillors, I am pleased to see progress on the issue, with Cork City Council set to acquire and subsequently demolish the property.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis vacant property has been a source of ongoing concern for residents in Bishopstown for many years. I very much welcome Cork City Council\u2019s decision to move forward with its acquisition and the planned works to clear and level the site.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a positive step for the local community and will help improve the area for residents. I will continue to work closely with my colleague Councillor Gary O’Brien in Cork City Council to ensure progress is delivered.\u201d<\/p>\n

The purchase price has not been disclosed by the council; however, according to Daft.ie, the property was sold for \u20ac250,000 in February 2022. The council plans to demolish the property once the acquisition is complete, and no plans for any further development at the site have been put forward at this time.<\/p>\n

It’s understood that the green space will be maintained as an amenity for local residents. When the property was put up for sale in 2007, the listing included the surrounding 1.6-acre green space, and residents feared it would be purchased and built upon by developers.<\/p>\n

Residents have used the park daily for more than fifty years, making it very unlikely that planning permission would be granted if an application were submitted.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in Cork city, the Council’s planning authority has submitted to An Coimisi\u00fan for the acquisition of two sites:<\/a> Monerea House and 8 Grange Terrace. Both have been empty and derelict for some time, and the City Council are now moving to take them over.<\/p>\n

Monerea House is on N27 (Albert Street) in the shadow of the Elysian, covered in overgrowth and ivy for more than a decade. Despite being along one of the city’s busiest roads, many motorists and walkers may not even be aware of the old property concealed behind the bushes.<\/p>\n

Also lodged was permission for the Compulsory Acquisition of Number 8 Grange Terrace. The Grange Road property has been vacant for years, sitting currently fenced off and with a boarded-up window.
