Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL<\/a>) is preparing<\/a> a broader artificial intelligence push that could turn its devices into a more open gateway for competing AI services. The company plans to let users choose from multiple outside AI models to power features across its software, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The change is slated for iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 this fall, giving users the ability to select third-party AI tools for tasks such as generating and editing text and images. Rather than relying only on its own AI software and services, Apple appears to be leaning into a platform strategy, where customers can access a wider range of AI options directly through its devices.<\/p>\n

The shift builds on Apple Intelligence, which was introduced in 2024 and currently gives ChatGPT the only third-party slot across features such as Siri, Writing Tools and Image Playground. Inside iOS 27, Apple refers to the new capability as Extensions, which allows users to access generative AI features from installed apps through Apple Intelligence tools. Users would be able to select the AI services they want through the Settings app, while Apple is also preparing an App Store section to highlight compatible AI apps. Apple has been testing integrations internally with at least Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG<\/a>) and Anthropic, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The company has also been working with Google on revamping the underlying models powering Siri and has partnered with Anthropic to support internal AI infrastructure and product development.<\/p>\n

For investors, the strategic message is that Apple could be moving deeper into AI distribution, not just AI development. That could possibly benefit partners such as Google and Anthropic, while creating a potential setback for OpenAI, which has so far held exclusive third-party status on a platform with more than 2 billion devices. ChatGPT integration arrived with promise in 2024, but usage has been more limited than Apple and OpenAI expected, while the two companies have become increasingly at odds over hardware as OpenAI recruits engineers from Apple to build AI devices. Apple is also planning to let users choose different voices for Siri conversations powered by external models.
