Some public health experts and anti-smoking groups worry that fruity flavors will\u00a0entice children; they point to the\u00a0Juul-fueled vaping crisis, driven by the\u00a0product\u2019s\u00a0fruity flavors\u00a0when it first came on the market.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But youth vaping rates have significantly declined in recent years, and the legal age to purchase tobacco is now 21. And there is research showing vaping can help smokers\u00a0transition away\u00a0from traditional cigarettes, though e-cigarettes are not without\u00a0health\u00a0risks.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

In\u00a0its\u00a0announcement, the FDA reasoned that the products manufactured by Glas Inc. will prevent young people from accessing the vapes while also\u00a0helping adults\u00a0quit\u00a0cigarettes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0company\u2019s\u00a0age gate technology\u00a0requires\u00a0Bluetooth connection to a smartphone as well as\u00a0age verification with an uploaded\u00a0government ID.\u00a0The device\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0work unless it is close to the phone\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0paired with.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBy helping to prevent youth use, device access restrictions are a potential game changer,\u201d Bret Koplow, acting director of the FDA\u2019s Center for Tobacco Products, said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n
