{"id":437199,"date":"2026-05-07T16:31:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T16:31:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/437199\/"},"modified":"2026-05-07T16:31:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T16:31:10","slug":"gaa-club-vows-to-fight-new-route-to-the-very-end","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/437199\/","title":{"rendered":"GAA club vows to fight new route \u2018to the very end\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As public consultations on <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/munster\/arid-41829542.html\">the revised \u20ac2.5bn Luas Cork<\/a> route begin, one sports club has vowed to fight the proposed rail line through its grounds \u201cto the end\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The preferred route for the proposed 20km light rail service was published three weeks ago, refining last year\u2019s emerging preferred route, with significant changes on the western end of the route, in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/property\/residential\/arid-41837751.html\">Ballincollig<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/munster\/arid-41832182.html\">Bishopstown<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In the preferred route, the Luas would travel along Melbourn Rd toward Curraheen Rd, joining Bishopstown Rd in front of Cork University Hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Route cuts through GAA and Rugby clubs<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Now the revised route will turn east at the northern end of Melbourn Rd, running past Bishopstown Community School and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/munster\/arid-41822969.html\">cutting through the grounds of Bishopstown GAA Club and Highfield Rugby Club<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) has said the preferred route is \u201cthe worst-case scenario\u201d, promising to engage with stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">However, following a meeting with TII, Bishopstown GAA has sent a message to members saying it is clear to it the preferred route is the only one being considered. The club said:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n            This is completely unacceptable to our club. We will fight this and we will fight it to the very end.\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A spokesperson for TII said the preferred route had been the result of detailed assessments of many alternatives:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cOur goal is to design a route that captures key destinations in health, education, industry, retail, and housing.
