Staying local, almost to the point of obsession. The small details start to carry more weight then, and the place becomes its own kind of world. The more you find out about a subject, the more there is to know.

What did that support mean for you personally and professionally?

It was a big boost, to be honest. Not just financially, but in terms of confidence as well. It gave me the time and space to stay with the work a bit longer than I normally could, and to trust the direction it was going in.

Is the landscape that inspired this work connected to a particular part of Donegal, and what makes that place special to you?

Yes, it’s rooted in a specific area, although the places are not represented literally in the paintings.

Well, I am from Letterkenny originally and the majority of my family still lives there, but my husband and I have been very fortunate to have found a home “Up the Glen” in Kilcar which is a place I was not familiar with at all up until a few years ago when we moved back from living abroad. You really have the feeling that this place still holds onto its own stories.

Donegal has such a strong visual identity—how has the county influenced your style as a painter?

It’s hard to separate it really. The light, the weather, the colours—they all find their way into my work without me trying too hard. Even when I think I’m painting something else, Donegal sneaks back in.

You may also be interested in

The title of the exhibition is in Irish—how important is the language and local heritage in shaping your work?

The Irish language feels very connected to place. Certain names hold a kind of atmosphere that simply doesn’t translate. I liked that the title could carry a sense of the place without explaining too much. The title of the exhibition, Saol Laistigh de Shaol, translates as “Life within a life,” and can also be understood as “a world within a world.” It refers to the many small, local place names that were never on official maps, but were part of how people understood and navigated their everyday lives.

What was the starting point for this exhibition—was it a single place, a memory, or a moment?

It probably started with walking, more than anything else. Returning to the same stretch again and again. Over time it built up into something that felt worth holding onto in paint.

Did receiving the funding allow you to do anything differently this time around, whether in scale, materials, or time spent on the work?

Mostly it gave me time, which is the most valuable thing. I was able to work a bit slower, to let paintings sit and come back to them. A few of the pieces ended up larger than I’d usually make as well.

What do you hope people from Donegal will feel or recognise when they see these paintings?

I’d like them to feel something familiar, even if they can’t quite place it. Not necessarily recognising the exact spot, but recognising the feeling of being somewhere they know well, seen from a different perspective.

Were there any challenges in capturing such a specific, local sense of place on canvas?

Yes, definitely. It’s easy for it to become too literal, or the opposite—too vague. Finding a balance between the two took a bit of time.

What’s next for you after this exhibition—can we expect to see more work inspired by Donegal?

I don’t have much say in the matter to be honest. I often start a painting with a very specific intention and the brush and oil take the painting in a completely different entirely. Like the singer and painter Joni Mitchell said, “Painting is like tuning in to secret radio station that only you can hear”.

Sinéad would like to acknowledge and thank Ealaín na Gaeltachta, John and everyone at the Áislann Chill Chartha, as well as all supporters over the years.

www.gallagherfineart.com

A Kilcar-based painter is bringing a deeply personal vision of place to life after receiving support through the…

[31
307,304,305,306,308,93,61,60
post-437894","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-arts-and-design","tag-arts","tag-arts-and-design","tag-artsanddesign","tag-artsdesign","tag-design","tag-entertainment","tag-ie","tag-ireland
["GET
