Protests will take place in Castlebar, Ballina, and Sligo today as part of a national protest by members of the Post Office Pensioners Union (POPU).<\/p>\n
The volunteer-led group will hold the demonstration from 1pm this afternoon to highlight the effects of the 2013 Pension Accord.<\/p>\n
POPU says the legislation, which was initially implemented to bring the An Post Pension Fund back to surplus, has achieved its objective but is still placing restrictions on pension increases while also allowing the company to significantly reduce its contributions to the fund.<\/p>\n
Spokesperson for the untion, Paul Moreland, said; \u201cRetired An Port workers who gave decades of loyal service are seeing the real value of their pensions eroded year after year.\u201d<\/p>\n
There will also be protests today in Mullingar, Cork, Longford, Thurles, and the GPO in Dublin.<\/p>\n
