It will be even tougher selecting a winner from among these great books.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She announced the shortlist at a ceremony on Wednesday at fund manager Schroders\u2019 US office in New York. The finalists are:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/12ab5104-2407-42ef-a9f3-f3a67d270d65\" data-trackable=\"link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">House of Huawei<\/a>: Inside the Secret World of China\u2019s Most Powerful Company, by Eva Dou, which investigates the rise of the Chinese technology company and the contribution of its founder, Ren Zhengfei, and the Chinese state.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8cecc6e1-72b0-4ca5-8606-392008bc09c2\" data-trackable=\"link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chokepoints<\/a>: How the Global Economy Became a Weapon of War, by Edward Fishman, which addresses the use of sanctions, and analyses how an economic arsenal was developed, and the consequences for 21st century business, politics and economics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b9972a7f-4aa6-4f8b-81bd-ae066eeff6ec\" data-trackable=\"link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How Progress Ends<\/a>: Technology, Innovation, and the Fate of Nations, by Carl Benedikt Frey, looks at the interconnection of innovation and bureaucracy in determining the destiny of civilisations and institutions and what that means for the US, China and Europe today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/bfe6b797-24fc-4f06-b251-a9928927c3ff\" data-trackable=\"link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Abundance<\/a>: How We Build a Better Future, by Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson, analyses the growth dilemma facing the US and the political trade-offs between regulation, investment, government support and innovation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/261a0eaa-7fb9-4052-ac78-f4d8d9969e72\" data-trackable=\"link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Breakneck<\/a>: China\u2019s Quest to Engineer the Future, by Dan Wang, examines the core differences between the US, a \u201clawyerly state\u201d, and its arch-rival China, an \u201cengineering state\u201d that empowers innovation and ambition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8f0e4f65-5e51-428d-b263-8716cd11555b\" data-trackable=\"link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Thinking Machine<\/a>: Jensen Huang, Nvidia, and the World\u2019s Most Coveted Microchip, by Stephen Witt, looks into the leadership style of the chipmaker\u2019s chief executive and how he helped Nvidia become one of the world\u2019s most valuable companies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s award is the 21st edition of the prestigious FT prize and is worth \u00a330,000 to the author or authors of the winning book. It is the first for 15 years in which a novel made the longlist. The judges welcomed the inclusion of fiction but did not select Drayton and Mackenzie, by Alexander Starritt, for the shortlist.<\/p>\n<p>The prize, which is also supported by FT owner Nikkei, will be presented in London on December 3.
