Dave Grohl is certainly one of the more likable fellas<\/a> in the music industry. His sunny disposition did not, however, do him any favors when trying to lock in a collab with a legendary rock star. In fact, the iconic singer told him to \u201cf***off.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grohl recalled the story during a video project with Foo Fighters bandmate Pat Smear. The pair teamed up with Playboy to document their tour of the late David Bowie\u2019s favorite spots in Los Angeles. At one point, Grohl brought up the hilarious story of how he tried to work with Bowie<\/a> on a song, but failed.<\/p>\n

We played at his 50th birthday party at Madison Square Garden, and that was the last time I saw him,\u201d Grohl said, via\u00a0Rolling Stone<\/a>. \u201cAbout two years ago, I got approached by this movie to do a song for the movie, so I thought, \u2018Maybe I\u2019ll have someone else sing. I\u2019ll do the music and then have another vocalist.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

A David Bowie\/Dave Grohl Marvel Soundtrack would have gone so hard<\/p>\n

Grohl thought to himself, \u201cMaybe I\u2019ll ask and see if David would do it,\u201d so he reached out. \u201cThe next day,\u201d Grohl recalled, \u201cI get an email, and it said, \u2018David, I watched the movie, and I got to be honest, it\u2019s not my thing.\u2019 He said, \u2018I\u2019m not made for these times. So thanks, but I think I\u2019m gonna sit this one out.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The Nirvana drummer says he thanked Bowie for considering it, and then received another quick reply: \u201cAlright, well that\u2019s settled then. Now, f*** off.\u201d <\/p>\n

Surprised and somewhat confused, Grohl tried to smooth things over by responding with a quip about Bowie having another big birthday celebration<\/a>. \u201cHe immediately sends one back,\u201d Grohl remembered, \u201cand says, \u2018Don\u2019t hold your breath. \u2026 No more birthdays, I\u2019ve run out of them.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Bowie didn\u2019t leave it at that, though. Grohl said the rocker ended his message with, \u201cBut that was a really fun night, wasn\u2019t it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dave Grohl accidentally offended David Bowie not once, but twice<\/p>\n

Interestingly, that was not the pair\u2019s only awkward interaction. In an April 2026 Dish<\/a>\u00a0podcast interview, Grohl shared that he once accidentally insulted Bowie after seeing the \u201cZiggy Stardust\u201d singer perform live.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told him, when I met him in the studio,\u201d Grohl recalled, \u201cI said, \u2018I just saw you. Like, it was such a trip to see you like in human form, right there, right in front of me.\u2019\u201d Bowie responded by asking Grohl, \u201cWhat did you think? What did you feel?\u201d <\/p>\n

This question stopped Grohl right in his tracks. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018Oh f***,\u2019\u201d Grohl remembered. \u201cSo the first thing to come out of my mouth, like an idiot, I said, \u2018Well, the first thing I noticed was all of your imperfections.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Ultimately, Grohl said he was able to \u201cbackpeddle\u201d out of it, adding, \u201cI don\u2019t know how I got out of that one.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Dave Grohl is certainly one of the more likable fellas in the music industry.
