The performance will be led by Galway natives M\u00e1ir\u00edn Fahy and Patsy Broderick, although Patsy has called Tralee home for so many years now that it\u2019s safe to call her an honorary Kerry woman at this stage.<\/p>\n
The performance will be in honour of and pay homage to the pair\u2019s East Galway roots as well as to one of the area\u2019s most popular and beloved musicians, Father PJ Kelly.<\/p>\n
Back when they were still aspiring musicians and not the veterans of the stage that they are today, both Mairin and Patsy said that they spent many Sunday afternoons listening to Fr.PJ Kelly, a Columban missionary, who, on his return from a Mission term, would join in the musical gatherings with local musicians in Ballinakill.<\/p>\n
Recently, Mairin and Patsy were delighted to get back to their roots in East Galway, recording the wonderful compositions of Father Kelly, which is a fitting tribute to a unique and very talented composer. The title of their album is Galway to Fiji: The music of Fr. Kelly.<\/p>\n
Patsy spoke to The Kerryman ahead of the show and promised that it would be a great night of craic and ceoil.<\/p>\n
\u201cM\u00e1ir\u00edn and I grew up playing music together, and I\u2019d say that one of our first trips together for music was to an All-Ireland Fleadh in Listowel, so we’ve fond memories from the place,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
“He [Father PJ] used to play with M\u00e1ir\u00edn\u2019s aunt, and every time he was home, we’d be there, and he\u2019s put us through our paces musically ahead of Fleadh Cheoils and whatnot. So when they were in the early stages of making the album, someone said to us that it\u2019d be great if musicians who had a link to Fr PJ would help out with it.<\/p>\n
“We put our heads together then and decided we\u2019d go for it, and we launched it last year, and since then we\u2019ve done a few launches of it up and down the country, and we can\u2019t wait to play it down in Listowel,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n
Special guests joining the duo on the night will be Yvonne Fahy, Eimear Coughlan, and Francis Cunningham.<\/p>\n
“She [Eimear] is phenomenal. She\u2019s unbelievable and just a lovely, lovely girl. As well as a great harpist, she\u2019s a great fiddle player too. Her grandfather was a renowned fiddle player called Paddy Canny, so there’s great lineage there,\u201d said Patsy.<\/p>\n
