The choruses were about the city that connects Europe to Asia, and not just from the Aston Villa<\/a> fans, either. \u201cIstanbul, you\u2019re having a laugh,\u201d chanted the Burnley <\/a>faithful, first when their side led and then when they equalised against the Europa League finalists.<\/p>\n

Yet a trip to Turkey has instead become still more serious for Unai Emery<\/a>. A club that has only qualified for the Champions League once in the last four decades may do so twice in a few days, or not at all. Now Villa\u2019s route back into the European elite may have to come via their meeting with Freiburg on the banks of the Bosphorus<\/a>. The stakes have been raised. <\/p>\n

Failing to beat a Burnley side who have not won a home league match since October means they still need three points to be mathematically certain of a top-five finish. Their last two domestic opponents are Liverpool and Manchester City<\/a>. If winning at Turf Moor would have allowed Emery to rest and rotate against Arne Slot\u2019s side on Friday, now he faces a decision. <\/p>\n

In a display of forced positivity, Emery declared himself \u201cvery, very happy\u201d with the performance at Turf Moor. \u201cWe can feel so proud of what we are doing,\u201d he said. \u201cTo be in the top five in the Premier League<\/a>, it is fantastic.\u201d Yet he eventually conceded: \u201cToday the point is not enough.\u201d But it was in keeping with their recent returns.<\/p>\n

Villa have plenty of evidence of Emery\u2019s alchemy; but precious little of it has been in the Premier League of late. Villa have a mere 17 points from their last 16 games, only one from the last three. \u201cIn the second part of the season we are struggling,\u201d admitted Emery. \u201cWe are not achieving the points like in the first half.\u201d <\/p>\n

That may yet cost them. After losing to relegation-threatened Tottenham, Villa drew with relegated Burnley. This was the match that seemed to represent their insurance policy. They could not cash in on it. Instead, Burnley were repaid with just a second point in nine outings. <\/p>\n

It was merited, too. Perhaps it was inevitable that Villa would not reach the heights of Thursday evening\u2019s semi-final demolition of Nottingham Forest<\/a> but they were flat for the first half-hour while, having wrestled themselves into the lead, they promptly conceded.<\/p>\n

There was a wastefulness. It may not matter \u2013 should City beat Bournemouth, Villa might not need another point anyway \u2013 and Emery remains on the brink of a remarkable achievement. But the air of desperation surrounding their search for a winner betrayed the sense they could require one. <\/p>\n

Instead, this was entertaining but inconclusive; sadly so, from a Villa perspective. The hangover from Thursday may have been a factor when they trailed. Lesley Ugochukwu\u2019s shot was parried by Emiliano Martinez but pushed out rather obligingly into the path of Jaidon Anthony, who scored Burnley\u2019s first goal in four games at Turf Moor.<\/p>\n

There was to be a second, sandwiching Villa\u2019s strikes. Zian Flemming had spurned two earlier fine chances, first to extend Burnley\u2019s lead and then to restore it, but he did equalise with a precise finish after Hannibal Mejbri, with a cute backheel, teed him up.<\/p>\n

Flemming took his tally to 10 Premier League goals. \u201cZian has been incredible,\u201d said caretaker manager Michael Jackson, who was also buoyed by the skill of winger Loum Tchouna. \u201cHe was a joy to watch,\u201d he said. And, for a change, Burnley were good to watch. \u201cA good performance,\u201d added Jackson. \u201cIt showed a lot of character.\u201d <\/p>\n

Villa\u2019s overworked core showed signs of fatigue. \u201cThey are tired but they want to play,\u201d said Emery. If Freiburg may not have been frightened by what they saw from Villa, the Spaniard\u2019s side improved after a slow start. Suddenly, they applied pressure. Ross Barkley<\/a> angled a shot wide. Ollie Watkins<\/a> had a leveller ruled out, the striker marginally offside as he headed in Morgan Rogers\u2019 cross. The debutant goalkeeper Max Weiss saved well from Barkley. It only delayed the equaliser by seconds as the midfielder headed in the resulting corner, taken by John McGinn. <\/p>\n

Culpable for Burnley\u2019s first goal, Emi Martinez created Villa\u2019s second, pinging a 70-yard pass to Ollie Watkins, who controlled it with his shoulder and slid a shot past Max Weiss with this second. Pressing his case to understudy Harry Kane at the World Cup<\/a>, he now has eight goals in 10 games. \u201cHe is doing fantastic,\u201d added Emery. \u201cHe is a fighter.\u201d For the moment, though, Villa have too few other form players.<\/p>\n

Yet they could soon be bracketed alongside past greats. Tony Morley, the man who set up Villa\u2019s winner in the 1982 European Cup final and a former Burnley winger, was on the pitch at half-time. The class of 1982 may soon be joined by the team of 2026 in Villa folklore. Or they may come agonisingly close on two fronts.
