A Dutch<\/a> hospital quarantined 12 staff members in a preventive measure after blood and urine from a hantavirus<\/a> patient were handled without observing strict protocols.<\/p>\n

The hospital staff members will be quarantined for \u200csix weeks, the Radboudumc hospital in the city of Nijmegen said, adding that the infection risk was very low and patient care continued uninterrupted.<\/p>\n

The World Health Organisation<\/a> (WHO) increased its tally of confirmed cases of the Andes \u200bstrain of hantavirus to nine, up by two from the previous day. It did not identify the new cases, but the tally followed announcements of positive tests for a Spaniard and a US citizen.<\/p>\n

International medical officials are working to contain the outbreak of the virus, which hit the MV Hondius luxury cruise ship, which has set off for the Netherlands after discharging its final passengers in Spain\u2019s Canary \u200bIslands.<\/p>\n

The virus can be deadly, although authorities say it does not spread easily from person to person so poses little risk of an epidemic.<\/p>\n

The Radboudumc hospital admitted the patient, a passenger from the ship, on May \u20607th.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will carefully investigate the course of events to learn from this so that it can be prevented in the future,\u201d said Bertine Lahuis, chairwoman \u200cof \u200bthe hospital\u2019s executive board.<\/p>\n

After the last passengers disembarked the ship in Tenerife in the Canary Islands, the MV Hondius set sail for the Netherlands late on Monday evening with 25 crew, a doctor and a nurse on-board. It is expected to \u2060arrive in the Netherlands by May 17th, shipowner Oceanwide Expeditions \u200bsaid.<\/p>\n

Two planes carrying 28 passengers and crew from aboard the vessel arrived in the Netherlands \u200bfrom the Canaries on Tuesday, shortly after midnight. Eight are Dutch citizens; the others will continue on to their home countries, authorities have said.<\/p>\n

Three people \u2013 a Dutch couple \u200cand a German national \u2013 have died since the start of the \u200boutbreak of the virus, which is usually spread by wild rodents but can also be transmitted person-to-person in rare cases of close contact.<\/p>\n

In \u2060addition to the nine confirmed cases, the WHO recognises two suspected cases \u2013 one \u2060person who died before being tested, and \u200bone on Tristan da Cunha, a remote island in the South Atlantic where there were no tests available.<\/p>\n

All suspected cases have been isolated and managed under strict medical supervision, minimising any risk of further transmission, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a press conference in Madrid.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the moment, there is no sign that we are seeing the start of a larger outbreak but of course the situation could change and, given the long incubation period of the virus, it\u2019s possible we might see more cases in the coming weeks,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In the latest confirmed case, Spain announced late on Monday that a Spaniard had tested positive, one of 14 quarantining at a military hospital in Madrid.<\/p>\n

The patient had developed a fever and breathing difficulties but was stable, the \u200cSpanish health ministry said.<\/p>\n

The confirmed cases also \u2060include a French passenger who tested positive after the ship docked in the Canary Islands on Sunday. French prime minister S\u00e9bastien Lecornu on Monday said the passenger was in intensive care but in a stable condition.<\/p>\n

US department of health and human services officials said on Monday that \u200c18 passengers from the MV Hondius were flown back to the US and quarantined, with the one passenger who tested weakly positive now in a Nebraska biocontainment unit.<\/p>\n

The WHO\u2019s Tedros thanked Spain\u2019s prime minister, Pedro \u200bS\u00e1nchez, for allowing the cruise liner to head there and disembark passengers.<\/p>\n

Standing next to him, S\u00e1nchez used the opportunity \u200bto call for funding for international organisations.<\/p>\n
