{"id":44578,"date":"2025-09-26T12:23:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-26T12:23:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/44578\/"},"modified":"2025-09-26T12:23:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-26T12:23:08","slug":"over-250000-children-left-in-poverty-in-ireland-as-campaigners-demand-childrens-budget-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/44578\/","title":{"rendered":"Over 250,000 children left in poverty in Ireland as campaigners demand \u2018Children\u2019s Budget 2026\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Government is being urged to use Budget 2026 to deliver targeted income supports to children living in the \u201cdeepest levels of poverty,\u201d as new figures show more than one in five Irish\u00a0children are experiencing enforced deprivation.<\/p>\n<p>At the launch of End Child Poverty Week, the Children\u2019s Rights Alliance (CRA) said over 256,000 children in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ireland-live.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ireland<\/a> are going without basic essentials such as food, heating and clothing.<\/p>\n<p>Tanya Ward, Chief Executive of the CRA, said the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ireland-live.ie\/news\/national-news\/1891084\/people-will-have-a-really-tough-winter-fears-for-irish-pensioners-as-budget-day-looms.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">cost-of-living crisis<\/a> and inflation are \u201craining down on children and young people\u201d in families already stretched to breaking point.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot discuss ways to mitigate the impact of child poverty without discussing the role income plays in perpetuating inequality,\u201d she said. \u201cConstant worry about eye-watering increases to daily essentials like milk, bread and butter leaves little room to even contemplate the components of a happy childhood like birthday parties, social outings or afterschool activities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Alliance is calling for Budget 2026 to be a \u201cChildren\u2019s Budget\u201d, including a \u20ac15 weekly increase in the Child Support Payment for children over 12 and a \u20ac6 increase for children under 12. According to the group, current welfare supports fall well short of covering the real cost of raising a child, particularly for older children in secondary school.<\/p>\n<p>Read Next:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ireland-live.ie\/video\/national-news\/1903588\/watch-all-you-need-to-know-about-registering-to-vote-in-the-irish-presidential-election.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">WATCH: All you need to know about registering to vote in the Irish presidential election<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A new RED C poll commissioned by the Alliance found strong public support for these proposals.71% of people believe the Government should increase social welfare supports for children in low-income families and 73% agree that additional means-tested child support should be introduced.<\/p>\n<p>Ward said that while previous budgets included one-off top-ups and bonus payments, these did not close the widening gap between low-income families and the Minimum Essential Standard of Living. \u201cUniversal increases alone won\u2019t cut it.
