{"id":446015,"date":"2026-05-13T03:01:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T03:01:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/446015\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T03:01:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T03:01:11","slug":"update-on-proposals-for-huge-arena-in-limerick-as-planners-make-decision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/446015\/","title":{"rendered":"Update on proposals for huge arena in Limerick as planners make decision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PLANS for a massive new dome arena on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/section\/231\/planning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">northside<\/a> have been given conditional planning permission by Limerick City and County Council.<\/p>\n<p>The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) is seeking to develop and open a new, 22-metre high multi-sports facility at its newest local campus at Coonagh.<\/p>\n<p>That has moved a step closer, with the council granting conditional planning permission.<\/p>\n<p>It means if there is no appeal to An Coimisi\u00fan Plean\u00e1la within a month, it will be upgraded to full permission.<\/p>\n<p>Included in the development is a 200-metre indoor cycling track.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/news\/motoring\/2080708\/update-gardai-investigate-circumstances-of-road-traffic-collision-in-county-limerick.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Gardai investigate circumstances of road traffic collision in County Limerick<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The college initially sought planning permission for the development last year before withdrawing it.<\/p>\n<p>It was March this year when the plans were reactivated with a fresh application going to council.<\/p>\n<p>A 7,201 square metre mixed indoor-use facility is planned, built around the cycle track.<\/p>\n<p>The arena will be able to be configured for gymnastics, badminton, volleyball, tennis, soccer and other compatible sports, as well as educational and community activities.<\/p>\n<p>It will provide seating for around 476 spectators.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s anticipated if the arena does go ahead, it will be able to also host examinations, graduations, conferences, exhibitions and cultural events.<\/p>\n<p>Some 32 car parking spaces are planned, with the council stipulating at least six of these be made available for electrical vehicle charging.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 48 covered bike spaces, plus new pedestrian links are also in the blueprint for the development.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s foreseen the arena will take the form of a contemporary indoor dome rising to 22.2 metres.<\/p>\n<p>Council gave the go-ahead to the development subject to 18 conditions.
