{"id":446254,"date":"2026-05-13T06:33:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T06:33:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/446254\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T06:33:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T06:33:09","slug":"social-security-cola-for-2027-expected-to-jump-as-inflation-rises-estimate-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/446254\/","title":{"rendered":"Social Security COLA for 2027 expected to jump as inflation rises, estimate shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(NEXSTAR) \u2013 Social Security beneficiaries could see a substantial bump in their checks in 2027, according to an early projection from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/seniorsleague.org\/cola-watch\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Senior Citizens League<\/a>\u00a0(TSCL).<\/p>\n<p>The TSCL model predicts that the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) will be 3.9 percent next year, up from an earlier, \u201cmeager\u201d projection that it would remain at <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/nexstar_media_wire\/5832784-a-new-social-security-cola-projection-may-be-cause-for-worry-senior-group-says\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2.8 percent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The annual COLA updates are meant to protect the purchasing power of Social Security beneficiaries when it comes to staple necessities such as food, housing and medicine. Increases vary and are meant to track inflation data.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/business\/5870669-these-are-the-best-metros-for-job-seeking-grads-in-2026-research-shows\/?ipid=promo-link-block1\" class=\"promo-link__link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\tThese are the best metros for job-seeking grads in 2026, research shows\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor retirees living on fixed incomes, the costs that matter most, especially healthcare, housing, utilities, and insurance, continue to rise faster than prices in the rest of the economy, silently wrenching seniors dry,\u201d Executive Director Shannon Benton said in a statement. \u201cThis makes the national affordability conversation even more important than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The average monthly check would go up just over $81, not enough to cover rising costs, according to the TSCL.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany seniors are telling us the same thing: As inflation picks back up, life still does not feel affordable,\u201d Benton added. \u201cThe average senior already lives on much less than younger Americans, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/topics\/income-poverty\/income\/data\/tables.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Census Bureau<\/a>, and our supporters constantly tell us they feel like they\u2019re falling farther and farther behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amid the ongoing war in Iran, the annual inflation rate jumped higher than expected in April, rising <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/business\/5873675-inflation-rate-april-iran-war\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3.7 percent<\/a>. As the conflict continues to squeeze the global oil supply, the cost of gas and other staples is going up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a real financial squeeze underway. For the first time in three years, inflation is eating up all wage gains,\u201d Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, told <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/business\/5873675-inflation-rate-april-iran-war\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Hill<\/a>. \u201cThis is a setback for middle-class and lower-income households and they know it.
