It was previously reported that Amazon is developing an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/897915\/amazon-transformer-alexa-phone\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alexa-enabled AI phone codenamed \u201cTransformer,\u201d<\/a> more than 10 years after it scrapped its ill-fated Fire Phone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Speaking to the Financial Times, Panay was asked directly if the company was planning another smartphone. \u201cIt\u2019s just not the goal,\u201d he replied. \u201cI know there\u2019s a lot of rumors out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">\u201cI think your black and white question is, are you going after a phone? A lot of people want me to say no, but a lot of people want me to say yes, I get it. Here\u2019s my take: it\u2019s not necessarily [that] we\u2019re going after a phone, no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">\u201cIt\u2019s a tricky question,\u201d he added. \u201cIf I black and white say no, I would say that was accurate. But I also think it\u2019s misleading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Much of Panay\u2019s long-winded answer to the question hinges on changes to the smartphone form factor, which he says is \u201cnot going anywhere,\u201d but is \u201cgoing through some transformation, and will continue to do so over the next 10 years.\u201d His hedgings could suggest that whatever Amazon is working on won\u2019t quite be a phone as we know it. Little is known about the reported Transformer project, except that the team explored both smartphone and \u201cdumbphone\u201d designs and that Amazon\u2019s Alexa Plus AI assistant will be central to the device.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Discussing AI wearables, Panay said that \u201cthere\u2019s a whole new set of form factors that we\u2019re working on,\u201d so perhaps the company\u2019s phone plans fall within that.
