{"id":446530,"date":"2026-05-13T10:20:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T10:20:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/446530\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T10:20:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T10:20:08","slug":"ireland-could-be-forced-to-borrow-next-year-if-oil-prices-keep-rising-says-top-economist-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/446530\/","title":{"rendered":"Ireland \u2018could be forced to borrow next year\u2019 if oil prices keep rising, says top economist \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">If the closure of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/strait-of-hormuz\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/strait-of-hormuz\/\">Straits of Hormuz<\/a> continues Ireland could face a serious recession, with the Government having to borrow money next year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">That is according to adjunct professor at Trinity College Dublin and research affiliate with the ERSI John FitzGerald, who outlined possible impacts of a continuing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/energy-crisis\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/energy-crisis\/\">energy crisis<\/a> to TDs and Senators on Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">FitzGerald told the Oireachtas Committee on Budgetary Oversight that if oil prices reached $140 (\u20ac120) a barrel, Ireland would be worse off by \u20ac7.5 billion, or 2.5 per cent of national income. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIf oil prices rose to over $200 a barrel, the hit to Ireland would approach \u20ac15 billion or 5 per cent of national income,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He also predicted that if the effect of the energy crisis reduced world output by 3 per cent, \u201cIrish national income and consumption would fall by at least 3 per cent in real terms, adding significantly to unemployment, with inflation rising well above 5 per cent\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In protecting those on low incomes, he said, \u201cthe welfare bill in the next budget would balloon. In real terms, tax revenue would fall, with lower consumption and employment.
