\n\tJordan Firstman<\/a>\u2019s Club Kid<\/a> found the beat during the film\u2019s world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival<\/a> on Friday afternoon, dancing its way to an electric seven-minute standing ovation.<\/p>\n

\n\tFirstman, in a first as writer-director-executive producer and star, soaked in the attention while hugging his stars, including Diego Calva<\/a> and Cara Delevingne. The 126-minute film premiered in the festival\u2019s Un Certain Regard selection. Club Kid casts Firstman as a washed-up party promoter who is forced to turn his life around when an unexpected visitor arrives \u2014 his 10-year-old son. Eldar Isgandarov and Reggie Absolom also star.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAny gay people in the house? Okay, the door is that way. You\u2019re not welcome here. We\u2019re gonna have to ask you how to leave the straight-only audience, please,\u201d Firstman joked before the screening. \u201cI\u2019m so fucking happy right now. This is such a dream come true. I mean, for everyone, there\u2019s a kind of semi-niche gay viral meme that was going around in New York a lot last year, and it was a picture of a can of soup, and it said, \u2018Some of you bitches would go to the opening of a can, and if the can sent you free clothes, you would post,\u2019 thank you, the can!\u2019 And so I put that in the movie, always hoping that one day I would get to say, \u2018Thank you, the Cannes.’\u201d<\/p>\n

I just want to thank my beautiful cast here for giving me their time and their spirit and their stories and their souls and their looks. Let\u2019s just say it: they\u2019re hot.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t \u201cWhat an honor to play in the \u2018Da-Bussy,\u2019\u201d Firstman later joked, intentionally mispronouncing the name of the Cannes Debussy theater. \u201cI love \u2018Da-Bussy.\u2019 I can\u2019t get enough of \u2018Da-Bussy.\u2019 I can live in \u2018Da-Bussy,\u2019 and I can\u2019t wait for my film to screen in \u2018Da-Bussy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter the premiere ovation wound down, the filmmaker shared some more remarks. \u201cI\u2019m just so humbled,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is a very personal story for me. And just the amount it took to get this done. We shot in real parties in New York, and to be let into the community, to be let into those spaces. Most of y\u2019all couldn\u2019t even get in without a camera, and we got in with a camera. No, no, you guys can get in. Everyone\u2019s on the list! Thank you!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFirstman indeed shot the film in real clubs around New York City over the course of 26 days. \u201cWe were let in because I was already there partying, and these are my friends,\u201d Firstman told The Hollywood Reporter\u2019s Mia Galuppo. The invitation was not taken for granted.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe subject matter was also personal for the creative, who cut his teeth as a writer on such shows as Search Party and The Other Two and as a consulting producer on Big Mouth. He\u2019s also been busy acting in recent years with credits that include Hacks, I Love LA, Dave, Rotting in the Sun, You People and more.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThese people in it are my friends. I\u2019m critiquing certain aspects, but I\u2019m not taking shots,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s a scene at the end of the movie where I tell one of the party girls, \u2018Take care of yourself.\u2019 And she\u2019s like, \u2018I always do.\u2019 To me, what I\u2019m saying about the party scene is that there is a moment for it, and you can outgrow it. Or, you can be right for it at the right time. It\u2019s not a condemnation of people who do drugs or like to have fun. This is more about this man who has overstayed his welcome, or never known a different option.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tClub Kid has some pedigree among its producers. Alex Coco, who won an Oscar for best picture for producing Sean Baker\u2019s Anora, produced the film alongside Lurker\u2019s Galen Core, Topic Studios\u2019 Ryan Heller and Michael Bloom. Executive producers include Firstman alongside Ian Stratford, Charles Croft, Jasmine Daghighian, Olmo Schnabel and Daniela Taplin.<\/p>\n
