\n\tElon Musk<\/a> is continuing his campaign against Christopher Nolan<\/a>\u2018s \u201cThe Odyssey<\/a>,\u201d asserting that the Academy\u2019s diversity guidelines are responsible for the director selecting a diverse array of cast members for the historical epic. \u201cWho specifically is the asshole who added DEI lies to Academy Awards eligibility instead of it just being about making the best movie?\u201d he asked. <\/p>\n

\n\tMusk doubled down on his attacks Friday, writing on X, \u201cChris Nolan desecrated the Odyssey so that he would be eligible for an Academy Award.\u201d Musk\u2019s comments don\u2019t take into consideration the fact that Nolan\u2019s Oscar-winning \u201cOppenheimer\u201d had a white cast and was Oscar-eligible<\/a> due to a number of other factors. <\/p>\n

\n\tMusk ramped up his criticism<\/a> Wednesday after Nolan confirmed that Lupita N\u2019yong\u2019o would join the cast of \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d as Helen of Troy. He amplified a tweet from conservative commentator Matt Walsh, who wrote, \u201cNot one person on the planet actually thinks that Lupita Nyong\u2019o is \u2018the most beautiful woman in the world.\u2019 But Christopher Nolan knows that he would be called racist if he gave\u2019 the most beautiful woman\u2019 role to a white woman. Nolan is technically talented but a coward.\u201d Musk replied, \u201cTrue\u201d and continued to promote his position that Nolan\u2019s casting is being engineered to win awards. He also objected to the casting of Eliot Page, retweeting posts mocking the actor\u2019s masculinity.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Academy\u2019s Representation and Inclusion Standards<\/a> for Best Picture eligibility were announced in 2020 and put into practice in 2024, requiring films to meet two out of the four standards for equitable representation on and off screen, including casting, subject matter, leadership and department heads, crew, apprenticeships and\/or audience development.<\/p>\n
