SFFGazette.com<\/a>) that 2019’s Joker movie proved a key source of inspiration for how he and director Andy Serkis went about unravelling\u00a0Gollum’s story.\u00a0<\/p>\n“We were thinking about the original ‘Joker’\u00a0film, the one with Joaquin Phoenix,”\u00a0Jackson said of the R-rated DC Comics adaptation\u00a0that explored Arthur Fleck’s transformation into the Clown Prince of Crime. “The way that explored the Joker\u2019s psychology while it was telling a story. We\u2019ve got the story that\u2019s in the appendices, and we\u2019ll tell that story, but we\u2019ll tell it from an internal Gollum perspective.”<\/p>\n
“You\u2019re taking written things by Tolkien and filming them from a certain POV, and that means you have to get inside his head. I\u2019ve got no particular desire to get inside Gollum\u2019s head,” he said with a laugh. “Andy Serkis can do that himself.”<\/p>\n
“I thought the film would be more interesting if Andy did it,” Jackson continued. “I honestly, truly believe that if it\u2019s a film about Gollum\u2019s addiction and internal struggles, Andy would make a much more interesting film than me. If I thought I\u2019d do a better film, I\u2019d do it. But I thought, there\u2019s a guy that\u2019s going to make a really interesting film here and it\u2019s not me.”<\/p>\n
There’s a lot of confusion surrounding the rights to The Lord of the Rings franchise, particularly with Amazon exploring Middle-earth’s past in The Rings of Power. Now, as Warner Bros. starts expanding on the events of the movies, Jackson explained what’s available to them.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“We\u2019re legally allowed to adapt anything from The Lord of the Rings books. Now, ‘The Lord of the Rings’\u00a0has got these big appendices at the end. Fifty or 60 pages of Tolkien\u2019s notes, background on characters and stuff that\u2019s not in the actual novel but is tacked on at the end,” he explained. “Little side stories, embellishments, enlargements \u2014 and part of \u2018The Hunt for Gollum\u2019 is described in that.”<\/p>\n
“Gollum\u2019s childhood and how he became what he was. Him trying to get to the Shire, and the Rangers tracking him down. He ends up being captured and taken to Mordor \u2014 it\u2019s all in the appendices,” Jackson concluded.<\/p>\n
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum\u00a0stars Andy Serkis as Smeagol\/Gollum,\u00a0Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf,\u00a0Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins,\u00a0Lee Pace as Thranduil,\u00a0Jamie Dornan as Strider, a.k.a. The story delves into Gollum’s past,\u00a0back in a time when he was known as a young Stoorish lad called Sm\u00e9agol.<\/p>\n
Serkis will\u00a0direct the movie.\u00a0Philippa Boyens and\u00a0Fran Walsh, who wrote\u00a0The Lord of the Rings\u00a0trilogy, are penning the screenplay, along with\u00a0Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou (The\u00a0Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim).\u00a0The Lord of the Rings\u00a0and\u00a0The Hobbit\u00a0director Peter Jackson, meanwhile, is producing\u00a0the project.\u00a0<\/p>\n
