He has been one of the great figures in Cork and Irish folk music from the 1970s, responsible (along with bandmates in Stoker’s Lodge) for saving and popularising scores of distinctively Cork songs that might have otherwise disappeared forever.<\/p>\n

And while he was a great intrepretor of well-known classics like The Boys of Fairhill, The Armoured Car and The Bantry Girl’s Lament , other songs, from Johnny Jump Up and The Groves of Blackpool to Salonika and The Star Of Sunday’s Well might not have made it into the 21st Century, without the recordings of Jimmy Crowley and those he played with through decades on the Cork music scene.<\/p>\n

These songs, written down and popularised in the 19th and early 20th Century, had largely faded away, with few remembering them, until a new generation came along to find, record and popularise them all over again. Crowley and his compadres often went to the eldler ballad singers of Cork’s pubs, to mine them for the songs that were slipping away into the shadows.<\/p>\n

Now Jimmy Crowley, aged 76, is looking for help as he deals with a double health blow, a cancer diagnoses and a stroke, which has left him needing specialist care and a highly modified home in Cobh. Without help, his partner Eve says Jimmy faces the rest of his life in a nursing home.<\/p>\n

In an appeal backed by a GoFundMe ( which you can find here<\/a> ), Jimmy has said: “Dear people of the Beautiful City and beyond….<\/p>\n

This is Jimmy Crowley, the singer from Cork. I’m having to call upon your kindness as a last resort. I’ve been rather under the weather of late. In late September 2025 I was diagnosed with Stage Three oesophageal cancer. Three months later, on 27th December, I had a debilitating stroke. I’ve been in the Stroke Ward in Cork University Hospital for nearly five months now.<\/p>\n

I had a good many setbacks and complications during that time, including several falls which resulted in a hip replacement and then periprosthetic surgery on the same hip. I am now mostly wheelchair-bound, but have not given up on learning to walk.”<\/p>\n

“Before the cancer diagnosis and stroke, I was a full-time musician, cyclist, all-year-round sea-swimmer, and walker. Now all I want is to be able to return home to Cobh, to my pussycat Smudge and my sweetheart Eve. I’m soon to be discharged from CUH, and the choice is stark: home or nursing home.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately the only way I can return home is if I have two carers living with me 24\/ 7. My partner Eve will be a full-time carer, but I need a second carer. I kindly request any donations, large or small, to help me afford a second live-in carer so I can finally return to Cobh and live at home, rather than in a nursing home, for the time I have left.<\/p>\n

His partner Eve says the funds raised will be used to pay the weekly wages of a carer, to modify the house as it’s needed and to cover any additional medical expenses.<\/p>\n

The good news is that, with the support of the wider community in the folk music world, the funds raised are near the \u20ac80,000 target.
