It takes something significant to make Steven Gerrard genuinely uncomfortable about the club he gave his entire career to.<\/p>\n

Friday night at Villa Park was that something.<\/p>\n

A 4-2 defeat that represented Liverpool\u2019s 19th loss across all competitions this season.<\/p>\n

A performance so devoid of fight, structure and identity that it left pundits and legends alike searching for words strong enough to describe it.<\/p>\n

And then Mohamed Salah, with one game left before he walks out of Anfield for the last time, picked up his phone and said everything that needed to be said.<\/p>\n

The backdrop to Salah\u2019s post matters.<\/p>\n

This is a player who has scored 255 goals in 435 Liverpool appearances.<\/p>\n

A man who transformed English football for nearly a decade and who, even in a season of collective failure, returned from a hamstring injury to play his part in what has been a desperately disappointing campaign.<\/p>\n

He rarely speaks out publicly.<\/p>\n

He does not do social media theatre.<\/p>\n

Which is precisely why when he does say something, it lands with the weight of a verdict.<\/p>\n

After the Villa defeat he posted a statement calling Liverpool \u201ccrumbling,\u201d describing the loss as \u201cvery painful\u201d and demanding the club return to being the \u201cheavy metal attacking team that opponents fear.\u201d <\/a><\/p>\n

He called the attacking identity that made Liverpool feared across Europe something that \u201ccannot be negotiable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coming from Salah, those are not throwaway words.<\/p>\n

They are a considered and damning assessment of where this club has ended up under Arne Slot.<\/p>\n

Now to Gerrard\u2019s reaction.<\/p>\n

Speaking on TNT Sports, Liverpool\u2019s greatest ever player did not hold back.<\/p>\n

\u201cWow. Listen, that is extremely interesting,\u201d he began.<\/p>\n

\u201cMo Salah doesn\u2019t really speak much, and he doesn\u2019t tweet, and he certainly doesn\u2019t tweet like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I think that he\u2019s sending a message to the outside that things in that Liverpool dressing room are not right.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe identity\u2019s gone and it\u2019s really hurting him to see it in front of his own eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gerrard then raised the question that has been on everyone\u2019s mind since the post went live.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs he speaking off his own back for the sake of everyone else in the dressing room?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s strange, it\u2019s unusual.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is a question worth sitting with, particularly given that eight of Salah\u2019s teammates subsequently liked or responded to the post<\/a>, with Curtis Jones going as far as calling the season \u201cway off the standards expected at this football club.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gerrard went further when addressing the defeat itself.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe performance last night was terrible, it was awful, it was difficult to watch from start to finish and it hurt me watching Liverpool last night.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t normally say that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was no fight, no passion, no pattern of play, no connection.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were nowhere near good enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nineteen defeats.<\/p>\n

Champions League qualification unconfirmed.<\/p>\n

A departing legend publicly dismantling the manager\u2019s approach one week before the season ends.<\/p>\n

Steven Gerrard called it damning.<\/p>\n
