\n\tFive years after the fourth and final season of the hit French series \u201cCall My Agent<\/a>!\u201d won an International Emmy Award, the gang is back for a feature film that sends its beloved agent-turned-filmmaker Andr\u00e9a Martel (Camille Cottin) into the south of France and straight into the chaos of a movie shoot gone off the rails.<\/p>\n

The hotly anticipated Netflix<\/a> movie also sees its characters return to the Cannes Film Festival, where the popular cast \u2014 Cottin, Fanny Sidney, Gr\u00e9gory Montel, Liliane Rov\u00e8re, Laure Calamy, Nicolas Maury and Thibault de Montalembert \u2014 walked the red carpet in style on Friday. Like Mike White\u2019s \u201cThe White Lotus,\u201d which picked Cannes as the backdrop for Season 4, the production of \u201cCall My Agent The Movie\u201d is on the Croisette filming additional footage for backstage scenes around the Palais des Festivals.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Variety at Cannes alongside co-writer Lison Daniel and director \u00c9milie Noblet, Fanny Herrero<\/a>, the series creator and co-writer of the film, said the movie will chart Andr\u00e9a\u2019s transformation as she pivots from super-agent to filmmaker, assembling a troubled production plagued by cast meltdowns, contract disputes and behind-the-scenes disasters in true \u201cCall My Agent!\u201d fashion. But the Cannes shoot suggests it will end well for Andr\u00e9a\u2019s movie. Picking up five years after the bittersweet end of the series, which saw Andr\u00e9a fold her talent agency A.S.K., the film sees Andr\u00e9a losing her lead actor just days before shooting starts. \u201cShe has to bring her old team back together,\u201d the synopsis says, alluding to Mathias and his daughter, who have launched a talent agency, and No\u00e9mie, who became a producer.<\/p>\n

Herrero said one of the biggest writing challenges was finding \u201cthe right organic plot\u201d to bring everyone back together, not only because of scheduling conflicts but also because they \u201call went in different directions.\u201d Mathias (Thibault de Montalembert) launches a talent agency with his daughter, while No\u00e9mie becomes a producer. Ultimately, Herrero and Daniel broadened the series\u2019 canvas. \u201cIt\u2019s very rich because it allows us to expand on what we\u2019re telling about cinema, about the making of a film, about behind the scenes,\u201d Herrero said. <\/p>\n

The film starts within the conventions of the \u201cCall My Agent!\u201d series, \u201cthen we take the characters and the story elsewhere,\u201d Herrero said. \u201cAt one point, the shooting of Andr\u00e9a\u2019s film begins, and we head to the south of France, into landscapes that are completely different from their usual Parisian backdrop.\u201d Noblet, who had not been involved in the series, said she approached the film by following the \u201ccinematic conventions\u201d of \u201cCall My Agent!\u201d \u201cWe had a little more time and more budget, so it\u2019s more sophisticated, but it\u2019s actually the same rhythm,\u201d Noblet continued.<\/p>\n

The feature expands the franchise\u2019s signature celebrity cameos with a pair of Hollywood stars, George Clooney and Eva Longoria, alongside French talent such as Laurent Lafitte, Vincent Macaigne and Laetitia Casta, among others.<\/p>\n

\u201cLison and I used to fantasize about actually having an A-list American actor. At one point, we thought, \u2018We\u2019re making the \u201cCall My Agent!\u201d movie, so let\u2019s go all out,\u2019\u201d said Herrero. \u201cWe weren\u2019t crazy; we\u2019d been given a little leeway. We weren\u2019t in full-on delusional mode; the producers encouraged us in that regard,\u201d she said, noting that the series\u2019 global success had earned admiration from stars ranging from Brad Pitt to Cate Blanchett. Herrero revealed that Pierre-Antoine Capton, the boss of Mediawan, played a decisive role in securing Clooney \u2014 a good friend of his \u2014 for the film.<\/p>\n

Herrero, Daniel and Noblet had the same constraint for the Clooney cameo. \u201cIt had to be a single unit of time, a single location, a single scene, and no more than one day. That\u2019s what he\u2019d given us. So we had to figure out how to coordinate that moment, both in the writing and in the directing,\u201d Herrero said.<\/p>\n

Clooney initially turned down the first version of his scene \u2014 which was a \u201ccomedy scene but with more slapstick,\u201d Herrero said. Clooney ultimately worked closely with the writers on a new one that sees him meet Andr\u00e9a (Cottin) and No\u00e9mie (Calamy).<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe said, \u2018I want to do this \u2014 I love the show too much,\u2019\u201d Herrero recalled. \u201cHe got involved, he suggested ideas to us \u2014 it was a true collaboration.\u201d<\/p>\n

Noblet admitted she was intimidated directing Clooney for the first time. \u201cFanny and I went up to his room, and he said to me, \u2018Tell me whatever you want; it\u2019ll be fine.\u2019 And that\u2019s exactly how it went,\u201d she said. \u201cHe was excellent, very professional. We shot for six hours, and he talked to the film crew between each take.\u201d<\/p>\n

Longoria\u2019s cameo in the movie grew out of a real-life meeting in Paris with Herrero. Longoria had spoken to her about adapting the series for Latin America and expressed an interest in shooting more projects in France.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe thought, why not offer her a little cameo in the movie? We loved the fact that she\u2019s already connected to \u2018Call My Agent!\u2019 She\u2019s also a fantastic comedy actress; she really adds a little extra spice to the film. And she said yes right away; she was super excited,\u201d Herrero said.<\/p>\n

Longoria plays a producer rather than an actress \u201cbecause she\u2019s actually a producer herself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are less aware that she\u2019s also a producer. And we like to show that actresses can also eventually become producers, become powerful women \u2014 which is really the case with her. She\u2019s truly an accomplished businesswoman.\u201d<\/p>\n

And while the movie marks a long-awaited reunion for fans, Herrero, Daniel and Noblet hinted it may not be the last.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re still alive,\u201d Herrero joked. \u201cThey haven\u2019t stopped at all. No one\u2019s dead, no career has ended. No one\u2019s in prison. Anything\u2019s possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMost of the French key cast of \u201cCall My Agent\u201d broke through thanks to their performances in the show. Cottin, for instance, has become one of France\u2019s most bankable actors who\u2019s worked with international filmmakers such as Michael Mann (\u201cAllied\u201d), Ridley Scott (\u201cHouse of Gucci\u201d), Tom McCarthy (\u201cStillwater\u201d) and showrunner Phoebe Waller-Bridge (\u201cKilling Eve\u201d). She recently starred in Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache\u2019s \u201cJust an Illusion\u201d which is thriving at the French box office. Calamy, meanwhile, won a Cesar Award for her role in \u201cAntoinette dans les C\u00e9vennes\u201d in 2020 and has since been nominated twice in the best actress category, in 2022 and 2023.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cCall My Agent\u201d has also become a cultural phenomenon, sparking local versions in a number of countries with top talent attached, including the\u00a0U.K.<\/a>,\u00a0Spain<\/a>,\u00a0Italy,\u00a0<\/a>Germany<\/a>, South Korea, Indonesia, the Middle East, Philippines, Malaysia and Poland.<\/p>\n
