The DCU’s new Brainiac opens up about the upcoming Superman fan film, Man of Tomorrow.

Man of Tomorrow is written and directed by James Gunn. The film is the fourth installment in the DCU. The movie stars David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The two rivals must put aside their differences and team up to fight against the supervillain, Brainiac (Lars Eidinger). It also features Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), Frank Grillo (Rick Flag Sr.), María Gabriela de Faría (The Engineer), and Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher).

Eidinger is officially stepping into the world of superheroes. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor revealed how he landed the role and what attracted him to the DCU villain. While he is best known for dramas and theater, Eidinger explained that stepping into a whole new genre actually felt very natural when he joined the cast of Man of Tomorrow.

AThanagar

BKrypton

CApokolips

DOa

Despite the major shift, Eidinger said that he does not see superhero films like Man of Tomorrow being all that different from the work he usually does. According to the actor, Superman, although very unrealistic and action-packed, still features a lot of drama. He described that most stories about the Man of Steel include a natural “deep psychological dimension.”

Eidinger also compared Brainiac to the works of Shakespeare. The Superman villain, who is considered to be one of the hero’s most dangerous enemies, seems to align with several elements of the writer’s plays. He explained that both share themes of corruption, power, and morality, which are common in theater. Additionally, the actor revealed how being on stage actually inadvertently prepared him to play the character.

Eidinger admitted that being in a DCU Superman movie had never really been something he dreamed of or really thought about. However, he added that now that he has been cast, he feels very comfortable portraying a supervillain and said that picking up the role seemed like it was “almost fated” now.

Brainiac was created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino, first appearing in Action Comics #242 in 1958. He is usually portrayed as an android from the planet Colu. He travels through space and kidnaps cities by shrinking and storing them in bottles before destroying their home planets. One of the locations he managed to capture is Kandor, the former capital of Krypton. Some iterations of the supervillain depict him as the cause of Krypton’s destruction.
