{"id":454697,"date":"2026-05-18T10:24:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T10:24:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/454697\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T10:24:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T10:24:08","slug":"disabled-woman-left-extremely-stressed-after-prosthetic-legs-lost-on-flights-from-brazil-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/454697\/","title":{"rendered":"Disabled woman left \u2018extremely stressed\u2019 after prosthetic legs lost on flights from Brazil \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A disabled woman was left \u201cextremely stressed\u201d and unable to work without her prosthetic legs after her bag went missing on flights between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/brazil\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/brazil\/\">Brazil<\/a> and Ireland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sara Ribeiro, who is from Brazil and has lived in Dublin for 10 years, travelled from S\u00e3o Paulo and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/heathrow-airport\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/heathrow-airport\/\">London Heathrow<\/a> and then on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She arrived into Dublin on Monday to find that the bag with the two prosthetic legs was not there. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ribeiro, an English teacher who lives in Phibsborough, said she spent five days trying to track down her bag and in the meantime she could not work. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The bag she checked in at S\u00e3o Paulo was destined to go through to Dublin without her picking it up at Heathrow Airport. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She rang British Airways\/Iberia and was told her bag had ended up in Madrid and would be with her within 48 to 72 hours. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As it turned out, the bag had been misplaced at S\u00e3o Paulo airport by the South American carrier, LATAM. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ribeiro lost her left leg at the age of 18 when she was hit by a truck in Brazil. The two prosthetic legs, one she usually wears and a replacement, had been repaired in Brazil. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Cases involving medical devices and accessibility should be treated with much more urgency and care by airlines<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \u00a0Sara Ribeiro<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cFor days, I\u2019ve had almost no communication from the airline and I\u2019ve been extremely stressed trying to track the bag alone,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI finally received information that it may return to Dublin, but the uncertainty and lack of support has been overwhelming.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Sara Ribeiro's bag was lost by an airline with two of her prosthetic legs inside. She has a wooden leg she uses for walking short distances, such as on the plane. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The bag eventually arrived on Friday evening. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI feel like cases involving medical devices and accessibility should be treated with much more urgency and care by airlines,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI feel like we have to talk about how the law won\u2019t protect disabled passengers enough.
