Garda\u00ed<\/a> have begun a search of a park in Clondalkin, west Dublin<\/a>, as part of an operation targeting the sale of drugs linked to organised crime. <\/p>\n

The search of St Cuthbert\u2019s Park by garda\u00ed from Clondalkin Garda station started on Monday morning and they were assisted by detective garda\u00ed and other services, including the dog and mounted units. <\/p>\n

The operation is also being assisted by South Dublin County Council. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis search operation is targeting the use of the park in the sale and supply of controlled drugs, linked to organised crime and antisocial behaviour in the area,\u201d a Garda statement on Monday said. <\/p>\n

\u201cAt this time, the park remains open to the public, with restrictions on movements in areas under search.\u201d<\/p>\n

South Dublin county councillor Francis Timmons said there have been \u201chuge issues\u201d with the park over recent years. <\/p>\n

The Independent councillor said the council was putting \u201cmajor investment\u201d into the park, including a playground, teen space, lights and pathways, but the contractor had to \u201cmove out of the site several times because of antisocial behaviour and intimidation\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe are now determined, South Dublin County Council and all the elected members, that the work will progress and we will reclaim the park and will get to use it because it\u2019s public land that should be used as an amenity for children and residents,\u201d he said. \u201cSafety is an issue and that has to be dealt with.\u201d<\/p>\n

Timmons also said it was welcome that 18 additional garda\u00ed had been secured for the Clondalkin area and said they were \u201cneeded\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been feeling a bit neglected around the area and the decent people around there have been feeling a bit just left there, knowing they couldn\u2019t use their own park, which is crazy,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n

\u201cBetween the new Garda resources and the council\u2019s determination backed up by the councillors, we\u2019re determined that the park will be used. We\u2019ve a local football club, Clondalkin Celtic, that wants to use the park and have loads of teams and they should be able to, that\u2019s what a park is for, not for drug dealing and drug use.\u201d <\/p>\n
