(ICTA-UAB via SWNS)<\/p>\n<p>                                    By Talker<\/p>\n<p>But the new findings challenge that theory, according to the Spanish research team.<\/p>\n<p>They analyzed marine mollusc remains \u2014 including small gastropods and limpets \u2014 recovered from Los Aviones Cave at an unprecedented resolution.<\/p>\n<p>The results show that Neanderthals not only collected shellfish sporadically but also possessed a deep understanding of marine ecological cycles, anticipating by thousands of years behaviors later documented in modern humans from the region.<\/p>\n<p>The research team were able to determine the season in which a mollusc was consumed thousands of years by analyzing the oxygen isotopic signal preserved in the carbonate of their shells.<\/p>\n<p>They explained that as the incorporation of heavier or lighter oxygen isotopes depends primarily on seawater temperature.<\/p>\n<p>Study lead author Asier Garc\u00eda-Esc\u00e1rzaga said: &#8220;By reconstructing variation during shell growth, these values act as a prehistoric thermometer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This makes it possible to infer temperature changes as well as the exact time of year when a mollusc was collected, revealing new details about seasonal consumption patterns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAQAAAADCAQAAAAe\/WZNAAAAEElEQVR42mM8U88ABowYDABAxQPltt5zqAAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==\" alt=\"Cavemen gathered shellfish using same methods as modern humans, suggests study\" class=\"img-responsive lazyload full blur\" width=\"1652\" height=\"1255\" data- data-\/><\/p>\n<p>             <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/6a0b655393e17.image.jpg\" alt=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" loading=\"lazy\" height=\"152\" width=\"200\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Cueva de los Aviones, Cartagena, Region of Murcia, Spain.
