There were many things that made season one<\/a> of Pluribus incredibly compelling<\/a>, including its intelligent and original take on an alien invasion and its across-the-board fantastic performances<\/a>. Drawing on both of those is the dilemma faced by main character Carol (Rhea Seehorn), who, after proving initially immune to the hive mind that ensnares almost every other human on Earth, immediately decides she must cling to her individuality no matter how tempting it might be to just give in.<\/p>\n

And Pluribus does a lot to show you the temptations Carol faces. If only she\u2019d surrender, the Others insist, she\u2019d be so much happier. So much more at peace. She\u2019d never be lonely again.<\/p>\n

In a new feature with Entertainment Weekly<\/a>, Pluribus creator Vince Gilligan was asked which post-apocalypse scenario he\u2019d choose if the show became real life.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy answer to this would probably change day by day these days,\u201d Gilligan told EW. \u201cWhen you watch The Walking Dead\u00a0or\u00a0The Last of Us or other shows like that\u2014which are very excellent, worthy shows\u2014the choice they seem to present to me as a viewer is: How would you survive, and would you want to in this world? But the choice is never really presented as, \u2018Would you want to be a zombie?\u2019 That\u2019s not really a choice. I\u2019ve never heard anyone say, \u2018Gee, I want to try that out.’\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cActually, part of the point in the creation of Pluribus was to have something that looked and felt like a post-apocalyptic tale. But I think part of the hope for me was when you\u2019re watching it as a viewer, you start to think, \u2018Is this so bad? Are Carol and [fellow immune person] Manousos barking up the right tree, wanting to change the world back?’\u201d<\/p>\n

On a personal note, Gilligan pointed out his age (almost 60) and the real-life dystopia we\u2019re currently living in as potentially swaying factors. \u201cThese days, I\u2019m starting to think, \u2018Gee, would it be so bad to be Joined?\u2019 We were actually talking about this very thing this morning before lunch in the writers\u2019 room. The simplest way to put it is, we\u2019re always trying to keep our minds open to the possibility that Carol\u2019s not right.\u201d<\/p>\n

But before you worry too much about Gilligan losing his mind, he added, \u201cThen there\u2019s other days where I say to myself, \u2018No, that\u2019d be terrible. That\u2019s not what human beings are here for. We\u2019re not here to just be at peace all the time.\u2019\u00a0I\u2019d take a happy medium with the accent on happy.\u201d<\/p>\n
