\n Stream BioEnergy\u2019s project to become Ireland\u2019s largest biomethane plant using mixed food and garden waste.\n <\/p>\n

Gas Networks Ireland has signed an agreement with Stream BioEnergy to connect a new \u20ac80 million biomethane facility in Little Island, Co. Cork, to the national gas network.<\/p>\n

The announcement is due to be made today at the All-Island Bioeconomy Summit at the Johnstown Estate, Co. Meath. Speaking on the news, Gas Networks Ireland\u2019s Head of Business Development Karen Doyle said:<\/p>\n

\u201cThis agreement with Stream\u00a0BioEnergy\u00a0marks another important milestone in the development of Ireland\u2019s renewable gas sector. Biomethane has a vital role to play in supporting Ireland\u2019s transition to a lower-carbon energy system while also delivering sustainable solutions for organic waste management.<\/p>\n

Connecting facilities such as this to the national gas network\u00a0demonstrates\u00a0how existing infrastructure can support Ireland\u2019s climate action targets, energy\u00a0security\u00a0and circular economy ambitions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Currently under construction,\u00a0Stream\u00a0BioEnergy\u2019s\u00a0new facility\u00a0in Little Island\u00a0is expected to become operational in 2027 and will process approximately 90,000 tonnes of domestic and commercial food and garden waste annually. Using anaerobic digestion technology, the plant will produce 80 GWh of renewable biomethane each year \u2014 enough renewable gas to meet the annual heating demand of approximately 6,000 homes.<\/p>\n

The project will be Ireland\u2019s largest biomethane plant using mixed food and garden waste and\u00a0represents\u00a0a significant step forward in the country\u2019s transition to renewable energy and circular waste management.<\/p>\n

By injecting renewable biomethane directly into the national gas network, the facility will help reduce reliance on fossil fuels and artificial fertilisers while supporting Ireland\u2019s decarbonisation ambitions. The project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 40,000 tonnes of CO\u2082 annually, equivalent to removing around 17,000 cars from Irish roads.<\/p>\n

Morgan Burke, Chief Operating Officer of Stream\u00a0BioEnergy, added:<\/p>\n

\u201cRenewable Gas can play\u00a0a central role\u00a0in reducing our emissions, and this agreement with Gas Networks Ireland marks a significant milestone for both companies and for the development of Ireland\u2019s biomethane sector.\u00a0Our project\u00a0in Little Island will provide for sustainable management of organic waste, enhance energy security, whilst contributing to our energy transition and decarbonisation targets in a meaningful way.”<\/p>\n

The agreement underlines Gas Networks Ireland\u2019s ongoing commitment to working with Ireland\u2019s emerging biomethane producers to deliver cleaner, more\u00a0secure\u00a0and more sustainable energy for the country.\u00a0Stream Bioenergy\u2019s Little Island facility\u00a0is the\u00a0seventh\u00a0biomethane production plant to be contracted to connect to the national gas network in the last\u00a0three\u00a0years with further contracts currently at an advanced stage of discussion.<\/p>\n
