Thousands of people using illegal streaming devices across Ireland<\/a> could soon find themselves facing serious consequences as Sky TV has reportedly ramped up efforts to crack down on “dodgy-box” users.<\/p>\n

Approximately 200 “dodgy-box” users, mostly in county Wexford, received letters from Sky threatening legal action if they do not submit in writing to never pay for illegal streaming services again.<\/p>\n

The letter allegedly gives recipients 14 days to stop using illegal IPTV services and sign a legally binding undertaking promising not to access the platforms again.<\/p>\n

Users are warned that failure to comply could result in further legal action. Under Irish copyright law, accessing copyrighted material through unauthorised streaming services can potentially carry severe penalties, including substantial fines and possible prison sentences, although enforcement against individual users has been rare.<\/p>\n

The move follows a recent High Court development in which Sky successfully secured access to the details of hundreds of suspected “dodgy-box” customers through banking records linked to IPTV payments.<\/p>\n

The letters also reportedly state that Sky’s actions are backed by other sports broadcasters and streaming platforms affected by piracy, including Premier Sports, GAA+ and LOITV.<\/p>\n

Speaking on RT\u00c9’s Morning Ireland, journalist Sean Pollock said that if recipients sign the letter from the media giant within the time-frame mentioned, Sky will consider the matter resolved.<\/p>\n

“This is essentially Sky sending the firing gun of enforcement against dodgy-box users,” said Mr Pollock, “which is something up until now they had been quiet reluctant to do. It’s certainly the first time they’ve done it en masse…and in probably the most aggressive matter than they have done it so far.<\/p>\n

“Obviously the letters were mostly targeted in county Wexford, where IPTV is Easy was based, but people did receive letter from all across the country,” he added.<\/p>\n

These latest developments have sparked widespread debate online, with many questioning how sky obtained customer details.<\/p>\n

“Sky got these details following a civil prosecution of the operator of IPTV is Easy,” Mr Pollock explained.<\/p>\n

“This was an individual who was based in county Wexford who was caught by Sky operating that service, and Sky was able to obtain those details for the individuals who had been paying for the service through Revolut, and once they got those details, it was really up to Sky to decide what action to take next.”<\/p>\n
