{"id":456923,"date":"2026-05-19T16:40:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T16:40:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/456923\/"},"modified":"2026-05-19T16:40:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T16:40:12","slug":"lgfa-not-involved-in-august-aflw-fixture-between-ireland-and-australia-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/456923\/","title":{"rendered":"LGFA not involved in August AFLW fixture between Ireland and Australia \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ladies-gaelic-football-association-lgfa\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ladies-gaelic-football-association-lgfa\/\">LGFA<\/a> has confirmed it is not in talks with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aflw\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aflw\">AFLW<\/a> over the staging of a representative match between Ireland and Australia this summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aflw\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aflw\">AFLW<\/a> confirmed last week that an inaugural Ireland v Australia game will be played at the North Sydney Oval on August 1st.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, the fixture will be an AFLW game and not an International Rules test involving AFLW and Gaelic football players, as was the case in previous men\u2019s International Rules fixtures organised by the AFL and the GAA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The match in Sydney will follow Australian football rules and the respective teams will be made up of Irish and Australian players currently lining out in the AFLW.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Previous men\u2019s International Rules series, the last of which was staged in 2017, saw a mix of Australian and Gaelic football (or \u2018compromised\u2019) rules used, and were played with a round Gaelic football.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Ireland v Australia match will be played ahead of the start of the 2026 AFLW season, which kicks off in mid-August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There are currently more than 40 Irish players in the AFLW, including Brisbane\u2019s Jennifer Dunne (Dublin), Carlton\u2019s Dayna Finn (Mayo), Hawthorn\u2019s Aine McDonagh (Galway), North Melbourne\u2019s Bl\u00e1ith\u00edn Bogue (Fermanagh) and Gold Coast\u2019s Niamh McLaughlin (Donegal), all of whom were included in last season\u2019s All-Australian team, the AFLW\u2019s equivalent of the All Star team of the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Four Irish players \u2013 Bogue, Erika O\u2019Shea (Cork), Vikki Wall (Meath) and Amy Gavin Mangan (Offaly) \u2013 were also part of the North Melbourne premiership-winning side last season.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The LGFA has confirmed it is not in talks with the AFLW over the staging of a representative&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":456924,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[91291,61,60,91290,43],"class_list":["post-456923","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ireland","tag-aflw","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-ladies-gaelic-football-association-lgfa","tag-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/456923","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=456923"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/456923\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/456924"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=456923"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=456923"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=456923"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
