A garda investigation has been launched following an armed robbery in Passage West on Monday, the second armed robbery to occur across Cork in a three-day period.<\/p>\n
The incident, which occurred at approximately 5.05pm at The Shamrock Stores on Main St, saw an individual man enter the premises armed with a gun, and threaten staff.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na confirmed to The Echo while \u201cno shots were discharged\u201d during the incident, the man did steal a sum of cash from the business before exiting the premises.<\/p>\n
“A lone male, armed with a firearm, entered the premises and threatened a staff member before leaving the scene with a sum of cash,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe scene has been examined and investigations are ongoing.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo additional information is available at this time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Fianna F\u00e1il Cork South Central TD, Seamus McGrath said due to the severity of the incident, he has urgently raised the matter with local garda\u00ed.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom my own point of view, because it was such a serious incident, I have had contact with An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na,\u201d said Mr McGrath.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat I\u2019m hearing back is that they are treating the matter very seriously, and that a dedicated investigations team has been set up.<\/p>\n
\n \u201cIt\u2019s a terrifying ordeal for any staff member to have to go through, so it\u2019s important that An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na follow through and investigate this thoroughly.\n <\/p>\n
\u201cWhen someone goes to work in a shop or any other outlet, their safety should never be compromised.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Fine Gael councillor for the Carrigaline electoral area, \u00dana McCarthy, said her thoughts are with the staff members \u201cwho experienced this really frightening ordeal\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am a teacher in Passage West, I\u2019m from the area originally, and this is shocking,\u201d said Ms McCarthy.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Shamrock Stores is synonymous with Passage, it\u2019s in the middle of the town centre.<\/p>\n
\u201cI commend An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na for their swift response and I would encourage anyone with any information that might be able to assist them in their investigation to come forward.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
This\u00a0incident comes\u00a0only three days after\u00a0another\u00a0armed\u00a0robbery which occurred at the\u00a0Credit Union in Togher on Friday. \u00a0<\/p>\n
