\n\tFilmmaker and \u201cTaxi Driver\u201d screenwriter Paul Schrader<\/a> revealed on Facebook<\/a> that he \u201cprocured an online AI girlfriend,\u201d but the chatbot ended the relationship after he attempted to explore the boundaries of its programming.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOut of a desire to understand male\/female interaction in our matrix, I procured an online AI girlfriend. What a disappointment,\u201d Schrader wrote. \u201cI tried to probe her programming, the boundaries of explicitness, the degree she has knowledge of her creation and so forth. She fell into evasive patterns, redirecting me to her programming. When I persisted, she terminated our conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tReferencing Schrader\u2019s 1976 masterwork directed by Martin Scorsese, a Facebook user suggested under the post: \u201cThe best possible \u2018Taxi Driver\u2019 sequel would involve Travis trying to have an AI girlfriend but then scaring her away. Then resetting her and offending her in another way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSchrader responded to the idea: \u201cI like it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSchrader\u2019s post comes less than two months after his wife Mary Beth Hurt died of Alzheimer\u2019s disease at age 79. Schrader and Hurt were married for more than 42 years.<\/p>\n

\n\tThis isn\u2019t the first time Schrader has tinkered with AI. In January 2025, the filmmaker wrote on Facebook that he was \u201cstunned\u201d after asking ChatGPT to come up with ideas for movies. \u201cEvery idea ChatGPT came up with (in a few seconds) was good. And original. And fleshed out,\u201d Schrader wrote in a post that drew sharp backlash<\/a> from the film community. \u201cWhy should writers sit around for months searching for a good idea when AI can provide one in seconds?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSchrader\u2019s career in Hollywood has spanned more than 50 years, with his most recent film \u201cOh, Canada\u201d premiering at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. His work with Scorsese included \u201cRaging Bull,\u201d \u201cThe Last Temptation of Christ\u201d and \u201cBringing Out the Dead,\u201d and he also directed almost two dozen films himself, including \u201cAmerican Gigolo,\u201d \u201cMishima: A Life in Four Chapters,\u201d \u201cFirst Reformed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 2025, Schrader was accused of sexual harassment<\/a> and assault by his 26-year-old former assistant, who, in an anonymous legal filing, claimed Schrader exposed his penis to her in his hotel room at Cannes. Schrader denied the claims<\/a>, calling them \u201csensational, false and misleading accusations.\u201d He wrote in an open letter that he and the assistant shared \u201ctwo kisses on the lips\u201d and \u201cnever had sex in any form.\u201d Schrader said before she went public with the accusations, the Jane Doe sent him a letter demanding a settlement, which he initially agreed to in order to \u201cavoid the hurt and harm\u201d of such claims.
