US<\/a> president Donald \u200cTrump<\/a> said on Tuesday that the United States may need to attack Iran<\/a> again and that he had been an hour away from \u200cordering an attack before postponing it.<\/p>\n

Trump was speaking to reporters at the White House a day after saying he had paused a planned resumption of hostilities following a \u200bnew proposal by Tehran to end the US-Israeli<\/a> war with Iran.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was an hour away from making the decision to go today,\u201d Trump \u2060said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s leaders are begging for a deal, he said, adding that a new US attack would happen in \u200bcoming days if no agreement was reached.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m saying two or three \u2060days, maybe Friday, Saturday, Sunday, something, \u200bmaybe early next week, a limited period of \u200btime, because we can\u2019t let them have a new nuclear weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Tehran, Ebrahim Azizi, head of the Iranian parliament\u2019s \u2060national security committee, said on X that pausing an attack was due to Trump\u2019s realisation that any move against Iran would mean \u201cfacing a decisive military response\u201d.<\/p>\n

Iranian \u200cstate media said Tehran\u2019s latest peace proposal \u200binvolves ending hostilities on all fronts including Lebanon<\/a>, the exit of US forces from \u2060areas close to Iran and reparations for \u2060destruction caused \u200bby the US-Israeli attacks.<\/p>\n

Tehran also sought the lifting of sanctions, release of frozen funds and end to the US marine blockade, according to deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi as cited by IRNA news agency.<\/p>\n

The terms as described in the Iranian reports appeared little changed from Iran\u2019s previous offer, which Trump rejected last week as \u201cgarbage\u201d.<\/p>\n

Reuters could not \u200cdetermine whether preparations had \u2060been made for strikes that would mark a renewal of the war Trump started in late February.<\/p>\n

He is under pressure to reach an accord that would reopen the Strait of \u200bHormuz \u2013 a key supply route for global supplies of oil and other commodities. Trump has previously expressed hope that a deal was close on ending the conflict, and similarly threatened heavy strikes \u200con Iran \u2060if it did not reach an accord.<\/p>\n

Trump said on Monday that Washington would be satisfied if it could reach an agreement that prevented Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere seems to be a very good chance that they can work something out. If we can do that without bombing the hell out of them, I would be very happy,\u201d Trump told reporters.<\/p>\n

A Pakistani source confirmed that Islamabad, which has conveyed messages between the sides since hosting the only round of peace talks last month, had shared the Iranian \u200bproposal with Washington.<\/p>\n

The sides \u201ckeep changing their goalposts,\u201d \u200bthe Pakistani source said, adding: \u201cWe don\u2019t have \u2060much time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The US-Israeli bombing killed thousands of people in Iran before it was suspended in a ceasefire in early April.<\/p>\n

Israel has killed thousands more and driven hundreds of thousands from their homes in Lebanon, which it invaded in pursuit of the Iran-backed Hizbullah \u200bmilitia.<\/p>\n

Iranian strikes on Israel and neighbouring Gulf states have killed dozens of people.<\/p>\n

The Iran ceasefire has mostly held, although drones \u200bhave lately been launched \u2060from Iraq towards Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, apparently by Iran and its allies.<\/p>\n

Trump and Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu said they launched the war to curb Iran\u2019s support for regional militias, dismantle its nuclear programme, destroy its missile capabilities, and create conditions for Iranians to topple their rulers.<\/p>\n

But the war has yet to deprive Iran of its stockpile of \u2060near-weapons-grade enriched \u200buranium or its ability to threaten neighbours with missiles, drones and proxy militias.<\/p>\n

The Islamic Republic\u2019s clerical leadership, \u200bwhich had faced a mass uprising at the start of the year, withstood the superpower onslaught with no sign of organised opposition.<\/p>\n
