\n\tOn Friday (May 22), Lee will release Tommyland Rides Again, a freshly refurbished and expanded treatment of 2005\u2019s Tommyland: The Ride, his second solo album after his short-lived side project Methods of Mayhem. Filled with guests \u2014 including Nickelback\u2019s Chad Kroeger, Good Charlotte\u2019s Joel Madden, Backstreet Boys\u2019 Nick Carter, Sum 41\u2032 Deryck Whibley, Dave Navarro of Jane\u2019s Addiction, Andrew McMahon (Something Corporate, Jack\u2019s Mannequin), Fuel\u2019s Carl Bell and others \u2014 the 12-song set peaked at No. 62 on the Billboard 200 and hit the Hot 100 with the Butch Walker collaboration \u201cGood Times,\u201d which was the theme for that year\u2019s NBC\/VH1 reality series Tommy Lee Goes to College.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cA couple years ago, my kids were tripping out and like, \u2018Dad, you gotta re-release this,\u2019 \u2019cause it was 20 years since it came out,\u201d Lee tells Billboard via Zoom. \u201cI didn\u2019t really think much of it, but then the studio got done being built and I was like, \u2018I wanna remix some of my stuff\u2019 \u2014 one being Tommyland: The Ride, for its anniversary.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSo I learned the process, and once you hear Dolby Atmos, it\u2019s insane. I\u2019ll never listen to regular stereo again. And now we\u2019re going down the rabbit hole and I\u2019m remixing anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAt the time of its release, and with its guest list, Tommyland: The Ride was a kind of snapshot of rock music circa 2005. More in the realm of Lee\u2019s 2002 solo debut Never a Dull Moment than Motley Crue\u2019s heavy glam rock or the industrial roots of Methods of Mayhem, Tommyland was decidedly more melodic and focused on songcraft, even downright gentle in spots. \u201cWhenever I do something solo, without Motley Crue, I\u2019m like a little kid in a sandbox,\u201d Lee explains. \u201cIt\u2019s just you, and you sort of have the freedom to do whatever it is that\u2019s blowing your skirt up.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe cover art kind of says it all; it\u2019s basically a, like, roller coaster (track) going into my ear, into my f***in\u2019 crazy, eclectic musical styles mind, and that\u2019s what it\u2019s always been.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn addition to the new mix, Tommyland Rides Again adds another track, \u201cStupid World\u201d with Chad Tepper, an uncharacteristically topical song that Lee wrote during the Covid pandemic. \u201cI found a bunch of stuff,\u201d Lee says, \u201cand the second I heard it I was, \u2018I gotta do this. The timing couldn\u2019t be better,\u2019 just because of the content. It\u2019s really about how ridiculously stupid the world we live in has become. Things have gotten even crazier since (he wrote it), and I was like, \u2018I\u2019m rolling with this. This is meant to be, \u2019cause shit\u2019s pretty stupid right now.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI mean, nobody knows what\u2019s real anymore, whether it\u2019s a photograph or a video, a political statement or\u2026just everything. Nobody knows if anything is real, and that\u2019s a really f***in\u2019 stupid place for us all to be in.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs excited as he is to present the newly mixed Tommyland to the world \u2014 he recommends \u201cHello Again\u201d and the helicopter effect on \u201cTrying To Be Me\u201d\u00a0 \u2014 Lee acknowledges that rock music, and the industry in general, was \u201cin a very different place\u201d when the album first came out.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBack then there was space for things, for music and videos to come out and be heard and seen and paid attention to,\u201d he says. \u201cNow\u2026Spotify releases, what, a half a million songs a day? More? Who the f*** is listening to that? We\u2019re f***ing inundated with content, not only music but all the arts. So how does someone cut through all\u00a0the static to actually find something that they love?\u201d Nevertheless, Lee notes, he\u2019s still inspired to keep creating amidst those challenges.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt does inspire me to make things really special so that they do stick out from the static,\u201d he explains. \u201cThere\u2019s so much noise out there that it inspires me to be better. But it also bums me out because we are where we are. You can\u2019t really undo it. So it\u2019s definitely more for me, 100 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLee did enjoy the trip down memory lane in revisiting Tommyland for its new edition. \u201cIt still means what it meant to be then,\u201d he says, including the presence of his various guests. The Nick Carter appearance raised eyebrows at the time, but Lee maintains that it was as natural as having any of the rockers on the set.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt wasn\u2019t like I sat around saying, \u2018Who do I want to collaborate with?\u2019 It just kind of happened track by track,\u201d he recalls. He met the Backstreet Boy when both were featured on an episode of MTV\u2019s Punk\u2019d, \u201cand we became really, really cool friends. I was working on this tune (\u2018Say Goodbye\u2019) around that time and we were at my house and I played it for Nick, and he just started singing and I was like, \u2018Oh, shit, what are you doing for the next couple days, bud?\u2019 He\u2019s such a cool guy, such an incredible voice. I was like, \u2018Let\u2019s do it. I\u2019m probably gonna hear a bunch of flak from some metal heads, but f*** them!’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs Tommyland Rides Again comes out, Lee is remixing more of his catalog, including his other solo albums and his Methods of Mayhem releases. He\u2019s eyeballing some brand-new material for 2027 and also \u201cwouldn\u2019t mind having a crack\u201d at remixing some Motley Crue in Dolby Atmos.<\/p>\n

\n\tBefore all that, however, he\u2019ll be on the road with the Crue for a The Return of the Carnival of Sins! summer tour, celebrating the 20th anniversary of that concert tour and the band\u2019s 45th anniversary. The 33-date mostly amphitheater trek, which also includes Tesla and Extreme, begins July 17 near Pittsburgh and wraps Sept. 25 in Ridgefield, Wash.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s gonna be fun,\u201d Lee predicts. \u201cThe last run we did was all stadiums, which was f***ing phenomenal. But I really do love a good outdoor amphitheater, shed vibe. That\u2019s always fun in the summer.\u201d Motley Crue also polled fans for setlist suggestions, which he says \u201cmade us go back and dust off four or five tunes that we haven\u2019t played in a long time, so I think the fans are gonna be pumped.\u201d He declined to name what they are, however.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe group has also released some new songs in recent years \u2014 \u201cDogs of War,\u201d \u201cCancelled\u201d and a cover of the Beastie Boys\u2019 \u201c(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (to Party)\u201d \u2014 but Lee says Crueheads will have to be patient for more. \u201cWe\u2019re always writing, and we do have some stuff kicking around,\u201d he notes, \u201cbut right now the only thing in front of us is going out to do these summer dates.
