Garda\u00ed in Cork city are investigating an overnight incident of criminal damage by fire in which a home was attacked with what has been reported to have been a petrol bomb.<\/p>\n
The incident occurred at approximately 2am on Wednesday morning in a domestic residence in the Tramore Road area of Ballyphehane.<\/p>\n
An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na said no injuries had been reported, and investigations are ongoing.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for Cork City Fire Brigade said two units had responded to reports of a house fire in the Ballyphehane area.<\/p>\n
\u201cCrews responded quickly but when they arrived on scene, the fire had been extinguished, and no action was required,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe two units returned to base and the scene was then handed over to garda\u00ed.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Donnchadh \u00d3 Laoghaire, Sinn F\u00e9\u00edn TD for Cork South Central, said the community was shocked at the incident.<\/p>\n
\u201cArson attacks put people\u2019s lives, families and children, at risk,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is disgraceful, there is no place for it, and I wish the garda\u00ed success with their investigation because those responsible need to be brought to justice, and swiftly.<\/p>\n
\n \u201cI know the families and neighbours affected will have been traumatised, it is truly disgraceful behaviour.\u201d\u00a0\n <\/p>\n
Mr \u00d3 Laoghaire said there was a need for a greater garda presence in the area, and he had asked the garda\u00ed to extend its current high-visibility policing out to the south inner city and Ballyphehane.<\/p>\n
\u201cBallyphehane is a proud and tight-knit community and I know people are stunned and disgusted this morning,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThose responsible have nothing to offer the community and put people\u2019s lives at risk.
