{"id":459196,"date":"2026-05-20T23:55:22","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T23:55:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/459196\/"},"modified":"2026-05-20T23:55:22","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T23:55:22","slug":"chinese-investment-in-europe-surges-to-7-year-high-despite-rising-trade-tensions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/459196\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese investment in Europe surges to 7-year high despite rising trade tensions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Chinese investment in Europe hit a seven-year high of \u20ac16.8 billion (US$19.5 billion) in 2025, driven by a strong rebound in mergers and acquisitions (M&amp;A) and record greenfield completions, a new report has found.<\/p>\n<p>But the annual study, published on Tuesday by Rhodium Group and the Mercator Institute for China Studies, cautioned that the pipeline may be thinning, with newly announced projects falling under pressure from Beijing\u2019s push to retain industrial capacity at home and <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3353994\/chinas-firms-have-glaring-weakness-they-face-barrage-eu-probes?module=top_story&amp;pgtype=section?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Europe\u2019s growing regulatory barriers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Chinese foreign direct investment in Europe \u2013 including the United Kingdom \u2013 rose 67 per cent year on year in 2025, as China\u2019s investors increasingly focused on the region. Europe\u2019s share of China\u2019s total global FDI jumped from 17 per cent to nearly a quarter, according to the two think tanks.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">M&amp;A activity drove the rebound, rising 89 per cent year on year to \u20ac7.9 billion, while greenfield investment hit a record \u20ac8.9 billion, retaining its position as the primary channel for Chinese investment in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Hungary remained the most popular European destination for Chinese FDI last year, attracting \u20ac3.9 billion of investment, but the nation <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/article\/3354060\/chinese-companies-hungary-scramble-adjust-post-orban-era?module=top_story&amp;pgtype=section?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">is starting to lose its commanding lead<\/a> over traditional strongholds such as Germany and France, the study found.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Meanwhile, Berlin and Paris caught up at a stunning speed. Completed Chinese FDI in Germany almost tripled to \u20ac2.5 billion and quadrupled in France to \u20ac1.9 billion.
