{"id":459276,"date":"2026-05-21T01:09:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T01:09:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/459276\/"},"modified":"2026-05-21T01:09:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T01:09:10","slug":"mccloskey-and-moloney-macdonald-take-top-rugby-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/459276\/","title":{"rendered":"McCloskey and Moloney-MacDonald take top rugby awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stuart McCloskey and Cl\u00edodhna Maloney-MacDonald have won the Rugby Players Ireland Player of the Year awards.<\/p>\n<p>Ulster and Ireland centre Stuart McCloskey was trecognised by his fellow players as the OCC Consulting Men&#8217;s Players\u2019 Player of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>A hugely influential figure throughout the season for both province and country, the award caps an extraordinary campaign for the 33-year-old.<\/p>\n<p>Jamison Gibson-Park, Dan Sheehan, and last year\u2019s winner and British and Irish Lions Player of the Series Tadhg Beirne were also on the shortlist.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Stuart McCloskey of Ireland in action against Kyle Steyn of Scotland - 2026 Six Nations\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/002412d5-614.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nStuart McCloskey was one of Ireland&#8217;s stand-out players<\/p>\n<p>McCloskey said: &#8220;I\u2019m not sure there\u2019s any world in which I would have imagined myself receiving this award this time last year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019ve really enjoyed this season and having the opportunity to test myself against the very best in the game.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m also honoured to share the field with many great players, and to have this acknowledgment from them is very special.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Moloney-MacDonald was named the OCC Consulting Women\u2019s Players\u2019 Player of the Year ahead of fellow nominees Eve Higgins and Brittany Hogan.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"24 August 2025; Cliodhna Moloney Macdonald of Ireland evades the tackle of Japan players Megumi Abe, left, and Minori Yamamoto during the Women's Rugby World Cup 2025 Pool C match between Ireland and Japan at Franklin's Gardens in Northampton, England. Photo by Harry Murphy\/Sportsfile\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/002316d7-614.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nCl\u00edodhna Moloney-MacDonald in action at the World Cup<\/p>\n<p>Having made her debut in 2015, Moloney-MacDonald is one of Irish rugby\u2019s longest-serving internationals and won her 50th cap during the Guinness Women\u2019s Six Nations.<\/p>\n<p>Recalled in 2024 after a three-year hiatus, Moloney-MacDonald has brought invaluable experience to a young and exciting squad that played before a record crowd last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The Exeter Chiefs hooker said: &#8220;It feels like I\u2019ve had two different careers with Ireland.
