Republican leaders of the US House of \u200cRepresentatives<\/a> unexpectedly cancelled a vote on Thursday on a resolution seeking to end the Iran war<\/a> unless president \u200cDonald Trump<\/a> obtains the authorisation of Congress. The development came two days after a similar measure was advanced in the US Senate<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The vote had \u200bbeen scheduled to take place late Thursday afternoon, just before politicians left Washington for their Memorial Day recess.<\/p>\n

The House had blocked three previous war powers resolutions in close votes earlier this year, with near-unanimous \u200bsupport from Republicans, underscoring the strong backing for the Iran war and the president within his party.<\/p>\n

But the margins \u2060had become increasingly narrow \u2013 the last resolution failed on a tie vote \u2013 as \u200cweeks \u200cpassed \u200bsince the US and Israel began striking Iran on February 28th. Thursday\u2019s measure looked likely to pass, given expected defections by \u2060a handful of Republicans and the \u200babsences of others.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had the votes without \u200bquestion, and they knew it,\u201d Representative Gregory Meeks, the top Democrat on the House Foreign \u200cAffairs Committee, told reporters after the \u200bvote was cancelled.<\/p>\n

He said the chamber\u2019s Republican leaders had delayed the vote until early June, \u2060after the Memorial Day recess.<\/p>\n

Democrats, \u2060and a few \u200bRepublicans, have called on Trump to ask Congress for authorisation to use military force, noting that the US Constitution says Congress, not the president, can declare war. They have expressed concerns that Trump may have entered the country into a long conflict without setting out a clear strategy.<\/p>\n

Most Republicans, and the White House, say Trump\u2019s actions are legal and within his rights as \u200ccommander-in-chief to protect the US \u2060by ordering limited military operations to stop imminent threats.<\/p>\n

Republicans control narrow majorities in both the House and Senate.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, the Senate advanced a separate, \u200cbut similar, war powers resolution, in a rare rebuke of Trump. That procedural vote on whether to advance \u200bthe measure for further votes was passed by 50 votes to 47, as \u200bfour of Trump\u2019s fellow Republicans voted with every Senate Democrat but one in favour.
