My mom always talks about how she watched the first season of Survivor when it aired in 2000. At the time, I was only two years old, and despite the extraordinary popularity of that inaugural season (the first episode garnered 15 million viewers, which grew to more than 51 million by the finale), my mom never would have guessed that 25 years later, her now-28-year-old daughter would be watching season 50 as a bona fide superfan. She helped me host a Survivor-themed birthday party when I turned eight, and now I host Survivor-themed parties with my fianc\u00e9 every year for our friends.<\/p>\n

Survivor is one of those unicorns of a show that has outwitted, outplayed, and outlasted so many other reality series to stand the test of time, still pulling record-breaking viewership 25 years into its run. It could have fallen into a formulaic trap, losing fan interest with its format repetition (contestants build shelter, make fire, compete in challenges, vote one another off\u2014rinse and repeat), but Survivor has evolved. The producers have introduced new twists and turns throughout the show\u2019s run to keep audiences engaged. Season 10 saw the introduction of Exile Island, a separate campsite where selected contestants were banished for small periods of time, \u201cexiling\u201d them from crucial conversations with tribemates, while season 22 offered eliminated players a chance at redemption in order to return to the game.<\/p>\n

But some of the most memorable seasons involved more personal twists. In season 16, appropriately titled Survivor: Fans vs. Favorites, superfans of the show competed against memorable returnees; in season 20 (Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains), beloved players faced up against so-called villains; and in season 27 (Survivor: Blood vs. Water), returning players competed alongside (and against) their loved ones. Who could forget Ciera voting out her own mother to make it further in the game?<\/p>\n

In a tribute to the fanbase that has kept Survivor alive and thriving for as long as it has, the twist for this 50th season was that producers gave fans unprecedented access and power. In Survivor: In the Hands of the Fans, viewers were able to vote on elements like tribe colors, immunity idols, and types of challenges. Some celebrity fans of the show also got in on the action, like Jimmy Fallon\u2019s diabolical twist that resulted in well-loved Christian Hubicki\u2019s torch being snuffed after he was forced to write his own name down at Tribal Council. The final aspect of this season that fans had a say in was whether there would be a return of the historic live finale, which, to no one\u2019s real surprise, was what viewers opted for. And last night\u2019s live finale certainly cemented its own legacy; who will ever forget host Jeff Probst spoiling the fire-making challenge before it even aired?<\/p>\n

While evolving game mechanics, interesting season themes, and true unpredictability have contributed to Survivor\u2019s longevity, it is abundantly clear\u2014after this season especially\u2014that it is the players themselves who give the show its magic. The U.S. iteration of Survivor has seen more than 750 contestants vie for the title of \u201cSole Survivor\u201d and the million-dollar cash prize for outwitting, outplaying, and outlasting all other castaways. We\u2019ve watched how real people, stripped of their status, social circle, and personal hygiene, can work with (or against) one another. Will the NFL player befriend the chicken farmer? Will the sex therapist try to blindside the rocket scientist at a Tribal Council? Will the alliances happen across gender, age, or other culturally significant lines? The relationships the castaways form influence not only whether they live to see another day in the game but also whether they\u2019ll be worthy of the ultimate prize. A brutal move against a trusted ally might mean making it to the end, but will that scorned castaway vote for you to take home the million? Survivor is more than a reality show; it\u2019s a study in human behavior.<\/p>\n

For these reasons, one can argue that there\u2019s never an undeserving winner of the show; whoever is voted Sole Survivor made whatever right moves were needed to gain the jury votes in the end. We\u2019ve seen some juries vote for the castaway who made the boldest plays and some juries vote for the castaway they simply liked the most, and while viewers might argue over which player should\u2019ve taken the final prize, on Survivor, the power is with the people who were there when it all happened, witnessing and participating in every unedited second on the island. <\/p>\n

This dynamic was evident when Aubry Bracco was revealed to be this season\u2019s winner. The 39-year-old social-media marketer is a four-time contestant on the show, coming in second place when she first competed during the 32nd season. This time, she was determined to make it all the way to the top, which didn\u2019t always make her a favorite of her fellow contestants or the public. Aubry notoriously played the middle, hopping between alliances and selectively sharing information to get to the end. The jury members lauded her strategic gameplay, crediting her ability to shift her name from the chopping block and selectively ally with those who would keep her torch lit for another day. Eventually, she earned eight of the 11 final jury votes and won the historic $2 million cash prize. Her victory was a testament to her power of adapting her tactics to the specific group of castaways she played alongside.<\/p>\n

We were shown the teaser last night for Survivor 51: The Open Era, which is being touted as an \u201canything goes\u201d season: Any twist, any advantage, and any challenge from all previous seasons are on the table. It\u2019s hard to say how the show might continue to evolve after a season as momentous as this one, but that\u2019s precisely what drives Survivor\u2019s engine. There is an infinite supply of possibilities, a massive pool of player hopefuls to choose from, and an ironclad promise that, no matter what, each season will be completely different because the players\u2014and their circumstances\u2014are vastly different.<\/p>\n
