Cork could have eight new train stations and a \u20ac1.8bn Dart-like service by 2032, according to the Irish Rail.<\/p>\n
If all goes to plan, the first two of those stations \u2014 Blackpool and Dunkettle \u2014 will be up and running by as early as 2029.<\/p>\n
The remaining six stations \u2014 at Blarney, Tivoli, Water Rock, Carrigtwohill West, Ballynoe, and Monard \u2014 would be fully operational by the year 2032.<\/p>\n
AJ Cronin, delivery manager of Irish Rail\u2019s\u00a0Cork Area Commuter Rail (CACR)<\/a> programme, told The Echo that Cork will have \u201cessentially a Dart-like service\u201d by the early years of the next decade \u2014 depending on funding and planning.<\/p>\n Mr Cronin was speaking after the launch of public consultation around phase 2 of the CACR programme.<\/p>\n Phase 1 of the scheme is now well advanced, he said, including the new Kent Station platform, twin-tracking of the Glounthaune to Midleton service, and the re-signalling of the full Cork network.<\/p>\n Electrification of Cork network\u00a0<\/p>\n Phase 2 will include the eight new stations, a new depot, and the full electrification of the Cork rail network.<\/p>\n This, Mr Cronin said, will help deliver the remaining infrastructure to allow trains to operate up to every 10 minutes across each of the three commuter lines to Mallow, Midleton and Cobh.<\/p>\n \u201cWe would hope to see a 12 to 18-month construction period for the Blackpool and Dunkettle stations, completing before the end of 2028, the start of 2029,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \n \u201cThe remaining six stations are expected to go into the railway order process before the end of this year, and it\u2019s expected that not just the six stations, but the fleet depot, and the electrification of the Cork network would be part of that railway order, and there\u2019s about a five-year build period on all of those.\n <\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019d like to say 2032 we will see operational status in the Cork area, that\u2019s our aim.<\/p>\n \u201cA five-car electric train will carry the passenger equivalent of nine buses or 1,000 cars, so in terms of reducing traffic congestion, this is going to be transformative for Cork,\u201d Mr Cronin said.<\/p>\n \n \u201cThis will be effectively a Dart service into Cork.\u201d\u00a0\n <\/p>\n Separate to Cork Luas\u00a0<\/p>\n The CACR is a separate project to the \u20ac2.5bn\u00a0 Luas Cork<\/a> project, which is a planned 20km light rail line running east to west across the city, from Ballincollig in the west to Mahon Point in the east, with 27 stops planned.<\/p>\n
