Robbie Keane has left Ferencvaros.<\/p>\n

Widely linked with the Celtic<\/a> job, Keane\u2019<\/a>s future has been subject of much debate, but this is now over after he resigned from the Hungarian giants.<\/p>\n

He moved to Budapest 18 months ago to replace Pascal Jansen. It was his second managerial role after just over a year at Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel.<\/p>\n

Some outlets have named Keane as the frontrunner for the Celtic role,<\/a> creating major intrigue around the latest update.<\/p>\n

According to Hungarian outlet m4sport.hu,<\/a> \u201cseveral sources\u201d have confirmed that Keane has tendered his resignation.<\/p>\n

It comes after, under his watch, Ferencvaros missed out on the Hungarian title<\/a> for the first time in eight years.<\/p>\n

Crucially, Keane does not appear to have been sacked by the club, rather leaving of his own accord. He extended his contract with the club in December.<\/p>\n

Along with Celtic, Keane has also been linked with the managerial vacancies at Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur and Slovan Bratislava.<\/p>\n

He delivered the league title after being hired midway through last season, but this campaign has been a different challenge.<\/p>\n

The title race went to the final day in Hungary, but a win wasn\u2019t enough to prevent FC Gyor from delivering a surprise title at the expense of Keane\u2019s side.<\/p>\n

To his credit, the Irishman did lead Ferencvaros to their first European knockout win in 50 years this season, eliminating Ludogorets in the first knockout round of the Europa League.<\/p>\n

He is certainly remembered fondly for his excellent form when brought to the club on loan from the second half of the 2009-10 season, a disappointing campaign for the club as a whole.<\/p>\n

His spell managing in Israel is troubling for parts of the Parkhead support, but it clearly isn\u2019t dissuading the club from considering him as a candidate.<\/p>\n
