{"id":462508,"date":"2026-05-22T23:36:22","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T23:36:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/462508\/"},"modified":"2026-05-22T23:36:22","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T23:36:22","slug":"retailer-predicts-farmers-will-suffer-if-state-caps-food-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/462508\/","title":{"rendered":"Retailer predicts &#8216;farmers will suffer&#8217; if State caps food prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Capping the price of basic groceries would mean \u2018farmers will suffer\u2019,\u00a0 a supermarket owner has argued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sinn F\u00e9in has said the solution to surging inflation is a price cap on essential items, such as bread, milk and eggs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pearse Doherty said that in power his party would establish a Grocery Price Caps Commission, which would \u201cexamine what groceries could be subject to maximum pricing and the forms that this may take\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstalk.com\/shows\/the-claire-byrne-show-2228535\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Claire Byrne Show<\/a>, Cleland\u2019s Supermarket owner Alex Cleland said that rising prices are \u201cabsolutely no benefit to my business or any other retail unit\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, he argued that retailers have no choice but to put up their prices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe higher the prices, the less people are going to spend because they&#8217;re restricted in their disposable income,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s no good to us, but the prices are rising because of costs that have been forced on us by the Government.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1476856\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/supermaket-vegetables-edit-new.jpg\" alt=\"Climate change affecting food prices: Fruit on display in a Tesco supermarket in 2018.\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1590\"\/> Fruit on display in a Tesco supermarket. Picture by: Doug Houghton \/ Alamy Stock Photo<\/p>\n<p>Mr Cleland continued if the Government does cap the prices of certain items, it will be Ireland\u2019s farmers who suffer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe prices are rising because of costs that have been forced on us by the Government,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, trying to put a price cap [on] the staples, like bread, milk and the rest of it, who suffers there?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the people that will suffer there will be the farmers and the farmers get kicked in the teeth enough in this country without the Government then putting something in place that&#8217;s going to force them to take the hit &#8211; which you can be absolutely guaranteed.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1433233\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/FJ6DY2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1440\"\/> A sheepdog herding sheep. Picture by: Alamy.com.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr Cleland predicted that price caps would lead to small retailers going out of business and said the Government would be responsible.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He added that blaming wars in the Middle East and Ukraine for the current economic climate was a \u201ccop out\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look at the billions that are wasted every single year through government spending and the public service, there&#8217;s billions wasted,\u201d he argued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s no accountability; the Government, these guys are supposed to be the people that are controlling that.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have absolutely no idea how to control it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Cleland urged the Government to reduce spending in the public sector and use the revenue to cut taxes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they&#8217;re not wasting billions on public service, they can reduce the desire and the need for taxes,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they reduce the need for taxes, it makes it easier to keep prices down because you&#8217;re not pushing prices up just to cover the cost, the tax costs, the cost of employment, cost of energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Main image: A farmer on Valentia Island.
