<\/p>\nAfter attracting the attention of more than 80,000 visitors since its reopening, the Newcastle Art Gallery has launched three new exhibitions for 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n
And, it\u2019s the first changeover of displays following the venue\u2019s long-awaited resurrection.<\/p>\n
Director Lauretta Morton admitted it was wonderful to be able to share the collection with the community.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are thrilled to move into our ambitious 2026 program, which will showcase significant exhibitions from local, national and internationally renowned artists,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has been really important to ground it in Newcastle.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can\u2019t wait for our community to see what else is in store throughout 2026\u2026 and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n

Torres Strait Islander artist Brian Robinson\u2019s exhibit Multiverse, from 23 May to 30 August, is one of the three new additions and includes the premiere immersive installation for the artist in NSW.<\/p>\n
He explained the display speaks to his ongoing fascination with storytelling, cosmology, memory and the ways Indigenous knowledge systems continue to evolve and expand across time.<\/p>\n
As well, it presents more than a decade of his work and various mediums, blending mythology with pop culture.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cTogether, they create a space where cultural knowledge, imagination and transformation converge,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cA place where the past, present and future continue to move in rhythm with one another.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo present this exhibition at the Newcastle Art Gallery this month is incredibly significant.<\/p>\n
\u201cMultiverse represents one of the most considered surveys of my practice to date.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can\u2019t get a better gallery to produce an exhibition of this scale.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd, it\u2019s a wonderful feeling to have this body of work presented here\u2026 for audiences across the country to enjoy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Newcastle-based creative Tiyan Baker will showcase her first solo show at the gallery, Mouth Mnemonica, on show from 23 May to 6 September.<\/p>\n
The exhibition is centred around the endangered language Bukar, spoken by her mother and other Bukar Biday\u01d4h people of south-western Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo.<\/p>\n
Baker explained it was an honour to share her family\u2019s stories and culture at the Newcastle Art Gallery.<\/p>\n
\u201cThrough this, I hope to give new life to our endangered language and the knowledge it holds,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Baker told the Newcastle Weekly it hadn\u2019t \u201cquite hit her\u201d that people now get to see her work.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just hope they like it and it resonates with them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI hope a feeling lingers with the audience after they leave.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
A collection of works donated by philanthropists Simon and Cattriona Mordant\u00a0is also on show.\u00a0<\/p>\n
It\u2019s the largest number they\u2019ve ever bequeathed before and is the first time they\u2019ll be presented collectively to the public.<\/p>\n
The pair flew from Italy for the launch party on Friday 22 May.\u00a0<\/p>\n
All exhibits will officially open to the public 24 hours later.<\/p>\n
