Robert De Niro had no idea his 1976 film \u201cTaxi Driver\u201d would be lauded as a classic.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou never can think that you\u2019re doing something that\u2019s going to have an impact,\u201d the actor, 82, exclusively explained to Page Six in a recent interview alongside his fellow Tribeca Festival<\/a> co-founder Jane Rosenthal to promote next month\u2019s event.<\/p>\n

The Oscar winner \u201cjust never look[s] at it that way,\u201d he adding, noting that success is \u201cout of your control.\u201d<\/p>\n

The neo-noir drama, directed by Martin Scorsese<\/a>, stars De Niro as an unhinged taxi driver named Travis Bickle, whose mental state deteriorates over the course of the movie. <\/p>\n

De Niro acted in the iconic role alongside Jodie Foster, Cybill Shepherd, Harvey Keitel, Peter Boyle, and Albert Brooks.<\/p>\n

The project generated controversy at the time for graphic violence and 12-year-old Foster\u2019s casting as a child sex worker<\/a> \u2014 and, later, for inspiring John Hinckley Jr.\u2019s attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, it is considered one of the greatest movies ever made and, in 1994, was designated as \u201cculturally, historically or aesthetically\u201d significant by the U.S. Library of Congress when selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.<\/p>\n

The movie, which turned 50 this year, is being screened at the June film festival \u2014 and De Niro and Scorsese, 83, will reunite for a conversation about the project.<\/p>\n

Their sitdown is just one of many special talks and screenings taking place at this year\u2019s 25th Tribeca Festival.<\/p>\n

Not only are interviews with Madonna, Sean Penn and Josh Safdie also scheduled, but there will be special anniversary screenings of \u201cCable Guy\u201d and \u201cBridget Jones\u2019s Diary.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are so many great things to see,\u201d Rosenthal told us. \u201cThere\u2019s so much music, everybody from Earth, Wind and Fire and Madonna to Noga Erez and Sarah Bareilles and Peter Frampton.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s just a lot to see,\u201d the 69-year-old continued, stressing that the festival is \u201ca welcome festival for all New Yorkers [with] tickets available\u201d now.<\/p>\n

The annual event, which runs from June 3 through June 14, was established in 2002 to spur the revitalization of Lower Manhattan following the 9\/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"You talkin\u2019 to him?
