The best of anime was celebrated at the tenth annual Crunchyroll Anime Awards. On May 23, creators of the year’s most beloved anime series and films gathered at the Grand Prince Hotel Shin Takanawa in Tokyo. My Hero Academia Final Season\u00a0took home the top prize of Anime of the Year, and also won Best Ending Sequence, Best Supporting Character, and Best Voice Artist Performance in French. On the film side,\u00a0Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle was awarded Film of the Year and received accolades in six other categories including Best Score.\u00a0<\/p>\n

More than 73M fan votes were cast for 2026’s awards, a significant jump from the 51M fan votes from last year. According to Crunchyroll, the countries with the most number of votes cast included Brazil, Germany, India, Mexico, and the U.S. While the awards were first held in San Francisco, it has since moved to Tokyo starting from 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Japan is home of anime,” Crunchyroll President Rahul Purini told TV Guide ahead of the ceremony. “Almost all the [nominated] shows today are created here, so it’s really important for us that we create a platform for the creators and the global fans can recognize them.” Though the streamer itself is unavailable in the country, it was paramount to Crunchyroll to honor the producers, directors, and musicians behind the year’s hits.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While the popularity of anime has soared since the inception of the Anime Awards, some outdated attitudes toward the medium remain. “I think the biggest misconception [about anime] a decade ago, and even right now, is that anime is a niche,” Purini said. But he shared why those views are behind the times. “There’s hundreds of millions of people around the world that watch anime. The fandom is so huge that it competes with any other kind around the world \u2014 it’s not niche, it’s a movement.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

The star-studded ensemble of presenters for the Anime Awards is a reflection of that movement. At the ceremony, The Weeknd announced the winner for Anime of the Year. Other categories were presented by actors including Winston Duke and Rashmika Mandanna, and artists including RZA, Young Miko, DANNA, TEN, BamBam, Ethan Bortnick, and hannah bahng.<\/p>\n

Another common misconception about anime is that it’s a genre \u2014 and the six nominated titles for this year’s Show of the Year disprove that. They are\u00a0Dan Da Dan<\/a>\u00a0Season 2,\u00a0Gachiakuta,\u00a0My Hero Academia Final Season,\u00a0Takopi’s Original Sin,\u00a0The Apothecary Diaries\u00a0Season 2, and\u00a0The Summer Hikaru Died<\/a>. These shows range from action-comedy to psychological-drama to horror. “It is a true representation of anime as a medium,” Purini said of these contenders. “Anime is for everyone, there is every genre of show in there.”<\/p>\n

Heading into the ceremony,\u00a0Dan Da Dan\u00a0led the pack with 20 nominations total, after being the most-nominated series at the 2025 Anime Awards.\u00a0The Apothecary Diaries\u00a0followed close behind with 17 nominations overall, while\u00a0Gachiakuta\u00a0scored 16. Each of these titles won major awards at the tenth annual Anime Awards. Dan Da Dan was awarded Best Comedy, The Apothecary Diaries\u00a0Best Drama and Best Director, and Gachiakuta Best New Series.\u00a0<\/p>\n
