It’s a gender-reversal film, led by Sacha Baron Cohen and Rosamund Pike. And what many believe should have been a message to men, from women, that they wouldn’t be treated similarly to how women are marginalised in a patriarchal society, transpired to be the exact opposite. Instead, in this movie, men are marginalised in an exaggerated way to prove a point.

Still, it finds itself ranked #1 in the Irish Netflix charts at present, so if you’re planning to kick back, relax, and watch it, here’s everything you need to know.

The story follows Damien Sachs, a wealthy, egotistical, chauvinistic advertising executive who thinks he has it all – money, power, and casual flings. That’s what makes the world go round, right?

After a confrontation with Alex Fox, a talented female employee he has belittled, Damien accidentally knocks himself unconscious and wakes up in a parallel world where women hold all positions of power.

Damien finds himself having drawn the short end of the stick, being marginalised in this matriarchal society. Meanwhile, Alex is thriving in her new leadership role.

The film explores gender dynamics through role reversals, workplace satire, and exaggerated social norms.

Sacha Baron Cohen, fresh off the back of his split from Isla Fisher, and Rosamund Pike star opposite one another in Ladies First as Damien and Alex, respectively.

The supporting cast includes comedian Tom Davis, Emily Mortimer, and Richard E. Grant, as well as Irish actress Fiona Shaw of Bad Sisters and Harry Potter fame.

What are people saying about it?

The gender-reversal principle sounds good in theory, but for many, it hasn’t been executed well in practice.

Ladies First has garnered a Popcornmeter rating of 68 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, and a Tomatometer rating of just 18 per cent – harsh!

One Letterboxd user has written: ‘Netflix continuing to validate my decision to cancel Netflix,’ as another penned: ‘I don’t know if the movie knows what it’s trying to say. It completely missed its own point.’

‘The role-reversal is more, “women are the ones sexualising men”, and not “the world run by women”. It pretends this matriarchy world would be equally as terrible a place to live in. Wrong,’ someone else wrote.

Another penned: ‘Somehow managed to make a movie about misogyny that still feels weirdly misogynistic.’

Watch the trailer for Ladies First below:

Netflix’s new film Ladies First seems to have struck a sour note with viewers.
