Format nerds got the cinematic gift of a lifetime last fall when Warner Bros. released Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s \u201cOne Battle After Another<\/a>\u201d in a variety of dazzling formats<\/a>, including not just the usual suspects like IMAX and 4DX but multiple celluloid iterations, including the ultra-rare VistaVision. One format in which \u201cOne Battle\u201d was not available was old-school 35mm \u2014 but that\u2019s about to change with the debut of a new print at Quentin Tarantino<\/a>\u2018s New Beverly Cinema<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On June 18-20, the New Bev will screen \u201cOne Battle After Another<\/a>\u201d in 35mm, giving cinephiles an excuse (as though one was really needed) to dive into Anderson\u2019s Oscar-winning epic once again and see how the grain and color of 35mm measure up against 70mm, VistaVision, and numerous digital formats. It\u2019s just part of a typically robust June calendar, which sees the New Beverly hosting a wide range of cinematic treats from beloved classics (\u201cThe Third Man,\u201d \u201cE.T.\u201d) and crowd-pleasers (a Tom Cruise sci-fi double bill of \u201cWar of the Worlds\u201d and \u201cEdge of Tomorrow\u201d) to masterpieces by foreign auteurs (Truffaut\u2019s \u201cWild Child,\u201d Antonioni\u2019s \u201cThe Passenger\u201d) and obscure kung-fu gems (\u201cSnake in the Monkey\u2019s Shadow,\u201d \u201cSnake Deadly Act\u201d).<\/p>\n

As usual, there are films that are completely unavailable on physical media or streaming platforms, like \u201cBlonde Ransom,\u201d a comedy from director William Beaudine never before released on home video, and rare opportunities to see old favorites as they were meant to be seen \u2014 in the case of \u201cCreature from the Black Lagoon\u201d and \u201cIt Came From Outer Space,\u201d in their native 3D. There\u2019s also a special advance screening of \u201cPig\u201d director Michael Sarnoski\u2019s new film<\/a> \u201cThe Death of Robin Hood\u201d in 35mm with Sarnoski in person, and midnight screenings of Tarantino\u2019s own \u201cInglourious Basterds\u201d and cult favorites \u201cExorcist II: The Heretic,\u201d John Waters\u2019 \u201cDesperate Living,\u201d \u201cMars Attacks!\u201d and \u201cA Nightmare on Elm Street 4.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are plenty of other treats as well, including weekend matinees of Lawrence Kasdan<\/a>\u2018s \u201cSilverado\u201d on June 27 and 28. Kasdan is having a bit of a well-deserved moment right now, with the release of his latest film, \u201cMarty, Life Is Short,\u201d on Netflix and a reissue of his debut feature, \u201cBody Heat,\u201d from Criterion, and the chance to see his 1985 Western on the big screen should not be missed. <\/p>\n

In keeping with Kasdan\u2019s usual practices, it\u2019s a rich ensemble film (Kevin Kline, Danny Glover, Kevin Costner, Scott Glenn, Rosanna Arquette, and Jeff Goldblum are just the start of the cast list) that\u2019s both philosophically rich and spectacularly entertaining \u2014 it combines the escapist thrills of Kasdan\u2019s screenplays for \u201cThe Empire Strikes Back\u201d and \u201cRaiders of the Lost Ark\u201d with the more contemplative, adult pleasures of his \u201cThe Big Chill\u201d and \u201cGrand Canyon.\u201d And like all of the movies on the New Beverly calendar, it\u2019s even better when watched with a packed crowd.<\/p>\n
