Temperatures could reach 31C today as Met \u00c9ireann issued a Status Orange thunderstorm warning for Cork<\/a>, warning of severe lightning, hail and spot flooding.<\/p>\n

The alert is in place from 2pm until 4pm today, with forecasters warning that widespread thunderstorms will move northwards from the south during the afternoon.<\/p>\n

Met \u00c9ireann said the storms could bring dangerous driving conditions due to slippy roads and impaired visibility, along with the potential for localised flooding.<\/p>\n

The orange alert for Cork comes as a wider status yellow thunderstorm warning remains in place for Kerry, Limerick, Waterford and Wexford from 2pm until 7pm.<\/p>\n

Despite the storm risk, much of the country is expected to experience very warm or hot conditions, with the highest temperatures forecast in the west and midwest.<\/p>\n

A separate status yellow high-temperature warning<\/a> remains in place for Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Clare, Galway, Kilkenny, Laois and Offaly until 6pm this evening.<\/p>\n

Met \u00c9ireann said temperatures nationally will range between 22C and 31C, while Munster could see highs of 25C to 31C.<\/p>\n

The latest hot spell has already broken Irish May temperature records several times in recent days, with Shannon Airport recording a provisional high of 30.5C on Tuesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Speaking on RT\u00c9\u2019s Morning Ireland, Met \u00c9ireann meteorologist Gerry Murphy said the heatwave is nearing its end.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter today it will be back to a typical mix of Irish weather and not as warm,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Temperatures are expected to return to the high teens and low 20s by the bank holiday weekend.<\/p>\n

Making the most of the sunshine\u00a0<\/p>\n

In Cork, people were out in force soaking up the sunshine, with the heat lifting spirits across the city.<\/p>\n

At The Marina in Blackrock, Liz McCarthy said the weather had \u201ctransformed the entire community\u201d, putting everyone in a good mood, as she walked with Ann Bassett.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels like a snapshot of a proper summer,\u201d Liz said.<\/p>\n

Ann added: \u201cIt\u2019s great. All the kids are out playing, they get to see each other more, and we get to see our neighbours. It\u2019s lovely.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

But something which has been \u201cdamaging the peace and privacy we have in our gardens\u201d has been drones delivering takeaway food, a project which is being piloted in the area, Liz said.<\/p>\n

Georgia Griffin and Tom Prendergast were also enjoying the sunshine in Marina Park after finishing their final-year exams \u2014 Georgia completing a four-year biomedical science degree at Trinity and Tom a degree in business.<\/p>\n

The sunshine is \u201cbrilliant\u201d, Tom said. \u201cEveryone\u2019s out, everyone\u2019s in a good mood. It\u2019s great to see the city like this.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Portia Lehane, from Carrigaline, and Robert Lukins, from Midleton, said they had no plans other than simply enjoying the sun in Marina Park.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like everyone\u2019s been looking forward to it for the last two weeks. It\u2019s nice to see it [the sun] actually came,\u201d said Portia.<\/p>\n

Robert added: \u201cYou see so many more people outside. Especially in a park like this in summer, it\u2019s way more enjoyable than every other day.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Paramedics Sarah O\u2019Neill, from Tower, and John Walsh, from Kinsale, were sipping on coffees as they basked in the rays.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just relaxing and taking in as much sun as I can before night shift tonight… working on the ambulance,\u201d Sarah said.<\/p>\n

Paramedics with Siptu and Unite have been engaged in a work-to-rule amid a dispute over pay and conditions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s frustrating,\u201d John said of the industrial dispute.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe obviously care about our patients and our job so much. But this is ongoing for 15 years now.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

John said he plans to swim this evening to \u201cjump in and cool off\u201d in Sandycove or Oysterhaven, his favourite places for a dip near Kinsale.<\/p>\n

Ava Joyce, from Douglas, was with her mum and sister, before her sister heads off to Thailand for a month.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love the sunshine,\u201d Ava said. \u201cI wish it was like this all the time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Brazilians Katia Cristina Jeremia and Inaci Raema said the weather reminds them of life back home in Sao Paulo.<\/p>\n
