\n\tCyrille Bollor\u00e9<\/a>, who took over from his father Vincent at the helm of the Bollor\u00e9 Group in 2019, has rejected accusations that his family or Canal+ are pursuing any political agenda, telling shareholders at the group\u2019s annual general meeting in Paris on Wednesday that there is \u201cno political project\u201d and dismissing the idea as \u201ca giant lie.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe was responding to a controversy<\/a> that has roiled the French film industry and turned out to be the biggest scandal of this year\u2019s Cannes Film Festival. It began with a petition (organized by the collective Zapper Bollor\u00e9) signed by some 600 industry figures \u2013 including Juliette Binoche and Arthur Harari \u2014 warning of Vincent Bollor\u00e9\u2019s growing grip over French media and culture. The dispute erupted at the Cannes Film Festival after the roughly 600 professionals \u2014 including Juliette Binoche and director Arthur Harari \u2014 signed the petition, organized by the collective \u201cZapper Bollor\u00e9.\u201d The signatories pointed to Canal+\u2019s acquisition of a 34% stake in theater chain UGC, with a potential move to full control by 2028, and raised concerns about a rightward editorial shift across Bollor\u00e9-linked outlets.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe crisis escalated when Canal+ chairman Maxime Saada<\/a> said he would no longer finance films from the petition\u2019s signatories. He defended the group\u2019s editorial independence, noting that Canal+ split from Vivendi 18 months ago and is now listed on the London Stock Exchange, and insisted that the company \u201csupports all kinds of cinema, all of its diversity,\u201d citing socially-engaged films such as Boris Lojkine\u2019s \u201cSouleymane\u2019s Story\u201d and Dominik Moll\u2019s \u201cCase 137.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRather than quelling the controversy, Saada\u2019s threat amplified it. The petition has since swelled to more than 3,500 signatures, drawing international support <\/a>from Javier Bardem, Mark Ruffalo and Ken Loach, among others. Le Monde reported that more than half of recent French films involved professionals who have now signed. The CGT Spectacle union and the Human Rights League (LDH) have since announced legal action for discrimination over Saada\u2019s comments, declaring that \u201cCanal+ will appear before the courts for having broken the law.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Bollor\u00e9 Group is the largest shareholder in Canal+ Group<\/a>, with a 30.4% stake, and the pay TV stands as one of the biggest financiers of French movies. The issue is that among the group\u2019s holdings is CNews, France\u2019s equivalent of Fox News, which has over the years given a mainstream platform to reactionary and far-right voices \u2014 and became the country\u2019s most-watched news channel in 2025. While Vincent Bollor\u00e9 officially stepped back from operational roles, he is known to still occasionally sit on green-lighting committees at Canal+ Group, fueling concerns about his influence over what the company chooses to back. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe controversy is unfolding in the run-up to France\u2019s 2027 presidential election, in which the far-right Rassemblement National is expected to be a frontrunner \u2014 a backdrop that has sharpened anxieties across the cultural sector about concentrated media power. Canal+ Group pledged to invest \u20ac480 million in French and European cinema across three years until the end of 2027. The next round of negotiations for a new pact has already begun with French film guilds.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking before shareholders, Cyrille Bollor\u00e9 struck a deliberately conciliatory tone, describing himself as being \u201cin a posture of appeasement\u201d and calling for \u201cbenevolence\u201d amid what he characterized as a climate of \u201ccollective irritation and agitation.\u201d Asked directly whether Canal+ would continue financing films from signatories of the petition, he distanced himself from the idea of any blacklist: declining to finance a screenwriter or scrutinizing \u201cwho says what,\u201d he said, \u201cis not, in my view, worthy of the debate.\u201d He stressed that he is \u201cnot in charge of Canal,\u201d in which the group holds \u201conly a stake.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe also slammed the characterization of the family and its companies as far-right. \u201cI cannot accept being told that we are fascists, that there is some plan that has been in place for years,\u201d he said, calling the accusation \u201cmind-boggling\u201d and \u201ca giant lie.\u201d He argued that such attacks are counterproductive, \u201conly serving to create tomorrow\u2019s fighters,\u201d and insisted the people he works with \u201cdon\u2019t recognize themselves at all\u201d in the portrait drawn by critics.<\/p>\n

\n\tPressed by a journalist on whether the Bollor\u00e9 family exercises oversight of CNews\u2019 editorial line, he called that narrative a \u201cfable\u201d and said he would not bend to the controversy. \u201cHonestly, I\u2019m not going to change anything,\u201d he said, arguing that the heightened scrutiny was predictable considering the pre-election timeline. \u201cWe\u2019re a year out from a presidential election\u2026 it\u2019s the same circus every time.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tOn his own politics, Bollor\u00e9 said, \u201cI\u2019ve never campaigned for anything.
